Letter of Inquiry

The Project Literacy Rising is a project with the goal of increasing literacy rates in all community members in New York. By reducing the risk of lowering literacy rates, New York’s community will see an increase in several intellectual faculties. By using interactive activities within a workshop, as well as classroomesque lectures from consulters, project members, and scholars, this hybrid course will work towards encouraging the community to read casually much more out of habit and enjoyment, rather than through obligation. By using local English artists, such as poets, writers, and professors, we shall keep things cheap and ever more relevant to the community members participating in the project.

Needs

The data I have presented encourages the social need of reading and thus becoming more in tune and aware of one's education. Reading is a large part of humanities, in that it allows one to access more scholarly knowledge. When such habits increase, as does ones exposure to knowledge and cultural awareness. However, as reading declines, ones exposure to these things decrease. People are less aware of not only the world around them and the cultures within, but also the events so close to home, and the reasons they happen. Some things could so easily be avoided, if people knew better, but they don't, because they don't read about it.
As shown in my literature review, my needs meet that of my funder, the New York Council for the Humanities, as they wish to prevent such misfortunes by encouraging reading, and thus more scholarly knowledge, involvement, and communication. With the organization I'd like to build, I shall be able to encourage such things within my community as well as bringing on the socialization that Americans seem to love so much.

Goals

The goals of the project are to increase reading and critical thinking within New York. The percentile of people within New York reading casually is steadily going down, which is in turn effecting their education and levels of success. By encouraging and forging good reading habits for these community members, we will no doubt reverse these numbers to put them at a much more positive rate. Also, as the casual reading increases, the gears in their minds will turn much more. Critical thinking will become more common place, and so individual thought shall shine all the brighter.

By doing this we shall host a number of meetings guided by literary scholars. They shall lead the community members to creating good reading habits, as well as posing brain tingling questions that will leave them musing even after leaving the meeting. The participant's thoughts shall race, itching them to read and think more on what was said, and what was left unsaid. Eventually, this will become an everyday habit to the members, thanks to continued participation in the programs.
