SAFETY OPERATING PROCEDURES

Belt and Disc Sander

DO NOT use this machine unless properly authorised and versed in its safe use and operation.

Eye protection required.
Respiratory protection may be required. / Long and loose hair must be contained.
Appropriate footwear with substantial enclosed uppers must be worn. / Close fitting/protective clothing (short sleeves) preferred.
Rings and jewellery must not be worn. / Gloves must not be worn when using this machine.

Unless under direct instruction, only one person to operate this machine at any one time.

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

1.  Check all equipment to be used for serviceability. Immediately tag and report suspect or defective equipment.

2.  Check workspaces and walkways to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present.

3.  Ensure you are familiar with the operation of the ON/OFF control switch.

4.  Check belt and disc are both serviceable.

5.  Check the table is set not more than 2mm from disc face.

6.  Operator must be positioned out of direct line of abrasive belt at all times.

7.  Ensure dust extraction is on before operating machine.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

1.  Avoid overloading. Allow machine to reach maximum revolutions before operating.

2.  Always place material on the table on the downward side of the disc travel to hold it down on the table surface. Contact the disc only between 9 and 12 o’clock.

3.  Hold material firmly against stops or table before applying pressure on abrasive.

4.  Keep fingers clear of disc or belt while sanding.

5.  Never leave the machine while it is running.

6.  Before making adjustments switch off and bring the machine to a complete standstill.

HOUSEKEEPING

1.  Leave the machine in a safe, clean and tidy state.

n Abrasions n Burns to skin n Eye injuries

n Excessive dust n Material being thrown

FORBIDDEN:

n  Attempting to sand very small items

n  Attempting to sharpen tools or sand metal – use a grinder or linisher.

This SOP does not necessarily cover all possible hazards associated with the machine and should be used in conjunction with other references
