Section Four

What are the risks of investing?

Understanding the risk indicator

Prescribed text to explain risk, for example:

Managed funds in New Zealand must have a standard risk indicator. The risk indicator is designed to help investors understand the uncertainties both for loss and growth that may affect their investment. You can compare funds using the risk indicator.

The risk indicator is rated from 1 (low) to 7 (high). The rating reflects how much the value of the fund’s assets goes up and down (volatility). A higher risk generally means higher potential returns over time, but more ups and downs along the way.

To help you clarify your own attitude to risk, you can seek financial advice or work out your risk profile at a specified Internet site maintained by, or on behalf of, the manager or the Retirement Commissioner.

Note that even the lowest category does not mean a risk-free investment, and there are other risks (described under the heading ‘Other specific risks’ that are not captured by this rating.

This risk indicator is not a guarantee of a fund’s future performance. The risk indicator is based on the returns data for a specified time period. While risk indicators are usually relatively stable, they do shift from time to time. You can see the most recent risk indicator in the latest fund update for this fund.

General investment risks

A summary of some of the things that may cause the fund’s value to move up and down, which affect the indicator. For example, investment return risk, market risk, company risk, credit risk and currency risk

Section Five

What are the fees?

Prescribed text on fees: You will be charged fees for investing in the scheme/fund. Fees are deducted from your investment and will reduce your returns. If the manager invests in other funds, those funds may also charge fees. The fees you pay will be charged in two ways-

  • regular charges (for example, annual fund charges). Small differences in these fees can have a big impact on your investment over the long term.
  • one-off fees (provide example).

A brief description ofwhat each fee category covers, how it is charged, and if it is not part of the fund charges, when the fee is charged to investors.

The fees can be changed

A statement as to whether fees can be changed and if so, how they may change.

If a fee is increased or a new fee is brought in, we must update the Register and tell you at least three months before the change takes place.

Include prescribed text stating that the manager must publish a fund update for each fund showing the fees actually charged during the most recent year. Fund updates, including past reports, are available at

Include the following example:

Example of how this applies to an investor

[name] had $[specify] in the fund at the start of the [select one: year/period] and did not make any further contributions. At the end of the [select one: year/period], [name] received a [select one: return/incurred a loss] after fund charges were deducted or $[specify] (that is [specify]% of [select one: his/her] initial $[specify]). [name] also paid $[specify] in other charges. This gives [name] a total [select one: return/loss] after tax of $[specify] for the [select one: year/period].

This example applies only to the specified fund. If you are considering investing in other funds or investment options in the scheme, this example may not be representative of the actual fees you may be charged.

Section Six

What taxes will you pay?

If the scheme is a PIE, PDS to include following statement

The scheme is a portfolio investment entity. The amount of tax you pay is based on your prescribed investor rate (PIR). To determine your PIR, go to [refer to an application form (if it contains information about how a person can work out his or her PIR) or specify a URL for the page on the Inland Revenue Department’s Internet site on which a person can work out his or her PIR]. If you are unsure of your PIR, we recommend you seek professional or contact the Inland Revenue Department. It is your responsibility to tell [name of manager] your PIR when you invest or if your PIR changes. If you do not tell [name of manager], a default rate may be applied. If the advised PIR is lower than the correct PIR, you will need to complete a personal tax return and pay any tax shortfall, interest, and penalties. If the default rate or the advised PIR is higher than the correct PIR, you will not get a refund of any overpaid tax.

If the scheme is not a PIE, the PDS must include a statement to the effect that tax can have significant consequences for investments, and if an investor has queries relating to the tax consequences of the investment, the investor should obtain professional advice on those consequences.
