A HOUSE RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING HIRAM SPAIN, JR., OF COLUMBIA FOR HIS YEARS OF SELFLESS SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY, HIS STATE, AND HIS LORD, AND FOR THE STANDARD HIS LIFE HAS ESTABLISHED AS A ROLE MODEL FOR COUNTLESS YOUNG SOUTH CAROLINIANS.
Whereas, Hiram Spain, Jr., a native of Conway, is the eldest of ten children born to Hiram and Gladys Spain; and
Whereas, he is a graduate of Whittemore High School in Conway, South Carolina State University with honors, and Howard University where he earned the Degree of Juris Doctor; and
Whereas, he has recently been called to the ministry, ordained by the Gethsemane Baptist Association, and served as the pastor of Saint Mark Baptist Church in Columbia since March 1999; and
Whereas, Hiram Spain has held positions in the office of Governor John C. West, where he headed the program which became the state’s first Office of Rural Development; has served as the chief executive officer of the Columbia Urban League and as the first black bureau chief of the South Carolina Department of Social Services; is a certified Master Social Worker; and was elected in 2000 as the first Executive Secretary of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina; and
Whereas, he has served his community in several civic capacities, including his service now on the board of The United Black Fund of the Midlands, the South Carolina Housing Partnership, The South Carolina Christian Action Council, I. DeQuincey Newman Institute for Social Change at the University of South Carolina, and Communities in Schools of South Carolina; and
Whereas, he is a past member of the Executive Committee of the Columbia Branch NAACP, a subscribing life member of the NAACP, and a current member of the Executive Committee of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Greater Columbia, and
Whereas, he has been recognized by Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities of the South, in the South East, in Black America, and as an Outstanding Young Man of America, and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; and
Whereas, he is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity degree at Columbia International Seminary; and
Whereas, Mr. Spain is married to the former Doris Bush, a Benedict College graduate and a teacher at W. A. Perry Middle School, and they are the parents of two adult children, both of whom are social work administrators. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Hiram Spain, Jr., of Columbia for his years of selfless service to his community, his State, and his Lord, and for the standard his life has established as a role model, for countless young South Carolinians.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Hiram Spain, Jr.
