DOUBLE DOOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTION: If this product is being installed next to a copper based wood preservative, a barrier must be installed between the treated lumber and this product to prevent a reaction between the metal and the preservative.

Please read these instructions completely before starting the door installation. All double door sets are shipped with the hinge jambs attached to the door panels to help prevent marring either one. We recommend that for easier installation, the door panels be removed from the jambs, the frame assembled, installed and the door panels reattached to the jambs. To ease the reattach-

ment, remove the hinge screws from the jamb and leave the hinges attached to the door panel.

1. Remove the door panels from the hinge jambs.

2. Lay out the hinge jambs and frame header and sill. The header and sill are the same and are

interchangeable. The frame assembly screws will be found as a pack, taped to the header

parting stop.

3. Assemble the jambs, header and sill with the screws provided.

4. The header parting stop should be installed after the frame is installed into the rough opening.

5. Install the assembled frame assembly into the rough opening, following the instructions

packed with one of the door panels. Make sure the installed frame is plumb and square.

NOTE: We recommend shimming between the frame header and the rough opening header and securing the header in place with screws, provided by others, to insure that the frame header does not flex, BEFORE INSTALLING THE PARTING STOP.

6. Reattach the door panels to the hinge jambs.

7. If it is necessary to attach the astragal to the inactive door panel, follow the instructions

Included with the astragal kit.

8. Install the lockset, following the instructions in the lockset.

NOTE: If the door assembly has an AJ astragal and a LatchGard is going to be used, IT MUST BE AN AJ PART NUMBER 1298L (LatchGard LG 171)

9. If a Tell Vertical Rod panic assembly is being used, read the following first!!

SUPPLEMENT FOR TELL VERTICAL ROD PANIC

Disregard the information in step #1 as the rods are not centered in the bore hole. Instead, install the panic bar and then make sure the outer edge of the top & bottom latch assemblies are the same distance from the edge of the door as the end of the panic bar. See the drawing below.

Use the Latch Drilling Template marked, “3 of 3”. Fold on the dotted line and place the folded edge of the template 7/16” (1.1cm) from the top edge of the door panel. The bottom assembly must be located so that the bottom edge of the assembly is 1/8” (.3cm) above the top of the strike which will be on the sill.

The assembly comes prepared for a RHR door. If it is to be used on a LHR, active door, the “handing” must be changed. Disregard the handing data in step 3.3, found on the page with six steps. Do use the data found in step 3 on the page with the exploded view of the panic assembly, along with the drawing at right. TIP: The pivot screw must be located in the lower position at the end of the latch assembly.

Cut the vertical rods to the proper length. Cut the end that is not threaded. You will have to re-drill the holes for the pin. For a standard AJ 6/8 height door, or any panel that is 79 1/16” tall, the top rod should be cut to a length of approximately 32”. The bottom rod should be cut to approximately 33 ¾”. Adjust accordingly for panels of different heights. Drill a parallel hole for the pin straight through the rods, approximately ¼” from the end.

When threading the rods into the main rail assembly, only thread them in approximately half way. This will leave room for final adjustment to insure the latches activate properly.
