Westport Little League Girls Softball
- Players play the positions of 1st, 2nd, Short Stop, and 3rd base (in front of the base running line) - with a player on the side of the coach who is pitching - the remaining girls playing outfield. Fielding charts should be prepared the day before (westportsoftball.com > Documents > Coaches Tools)
- Must rotate your players between infield and outfield position – never leaving one player in outfield for more than 1 inning.
- Pitching is by the coach with another coach behind the catcher to move the game along.
- Innings are 3 outs or 4 run mercy rule.
- A batter is allowed 5 COACH PITCHES at which point a tee is then brought out. They swing until they hit a fair ball. This should be adhered to in order to ensure the game moves along.
- There are no calls of balls or strikes - strikes are only if the player swings and misses.
- One base on a hit a hit
- No stealing.No taking a base on overthrows.
- Suggested to have 3 coaches -- one to watch the girls on the bench, call batting order/ position fielders (go out on the field and show them please), one coach pitching, and one behind the catcher (should also assist the catcher getting in the gear).
- Make sure catchers are proper distance away from plate and in the correct catcher's stance - not on one/two knees.
- Play with new 11' inch softees provided with the uniforms (practice balls are in the equipment bag)
- Playing time 1 hour 30 minutes or 5 innings. 1-2 minutes between innings max. Maximize action time.
- No girl should be holding a bat in the dugout area, only at the plate. On-deck swinging is not allowed
- The girls are to remain in their dug out, when their team is up for batting.
- No score is kept
- Line up and “Good game” at end.
Please keep an emphasis on speeding up the game. More action = more fun
