French III 2010–2011 Syllabus
Monsieur Chiddo
Room C203
Bonjour, tout le monde! Bienvenue! Welcome to another exciting year of French. This year, you will continue to build your skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing French, in addition to learning about people around the world who speak French.
Required Supplies:
· C’est à toi! Level 2 textbook & workbook (EMC/Paradigm)
· Belleville 1 (CLE International)
· French/English dictionary
· Three-ring binder (Use dividers to organize your binder by unit.)
· Index cards (Get rubber bands or paper clips to keep them organized.)
· Colored pencils and scissors
Expectations:
1. You may consume only water and air in the classroom. If you have any food, gum, or non-water drinks, make sure they do not exit your backpack in the classroom.
2. Be ready to start class when the bell rings. Because this classroom is far away from the main hall, you must pace yourself accordingly to make sure you arrive on time.
3. Homework must be completed before the start of class, not while your teacher is coming around the room to check it.
4. During lessons, do not work on anything unrelated to the lesson, including French homework.
5. Always bring all of your supplies. At the beginning of class, put them on your desk, and then put your backpack in the back of the classroom to allow space for you teacher to circulate the aisles. Make sure your homework is out on the desk to be checked.
6. Keep an organized notebook. Save all your documents and file them by unit.
7. Maximize your class time by paying attention. Learn as much as you can during class so that you have less to do at home.
8. Always be respectful to your classmates and teacher.
9. Respect all school rules listed in the handbook (e.g., policies concerning cell phones, uniforms, honor code, etc.).
Consequences:
· Exhibiting a pattern of behavior that does not meet these expectations will result in a call to parents and will affect your conduct (C1-C4) grade for the quarter.
· Each time you fail to obey rules 1, 2, or 8 (eating/drinking in class, tardiness, and being respectful), I will make a note in my gradebook. After three infractions, you will receive detention (see handbook detention guidelines).
Evaluation:
Each quarter, your final grade will be based on category averages as follows:
% of Grade / Course Component35 / Tests & Projects
30 / Quizzes & Mini-Projects
20 / Homework & Classwork
15 / Class Participation
Participation: Participation is very important in a language class. See the attached oral participation guidelines for more information.
Makeup Work: As specified in the handbook, upon return from an excused absence, the number of days absent dictates the number of days allowed for makeup work (unless there are exceptional circumstances). Quizzes, orals, and tests must be made up after school, not during class.
Late Work: No late homework will be accepted. Grades for late non-homework assignments will be lowered by up to 10% per day late.
After School: If you ever need additional help with any of the material we cover in class, if you have makeup work to do, or if you have questions to ask in English, please visit me in my classroom any day after school except Monday. If you need to stay later than 3:45, my office hours will be until 4:00 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You can also e-mail me at any time. Always send e-mails to both of the addresses listed at the top of the syllabus to make sure that I receive them.
Note: I have after-school duties on certain weeks. If I am not in my room, just wait there, or come look for me to let me know you will stop by later.
Quiz & Test Retakes: You will not have to opportunity to retake your quizzes and tests as you did last year. This will help to motivate you to study the first time around.
Blackbaud Grading Site: Check your grades online. If you feel that a mistake has been made, bring in the original graded assignment. If you can’t show this proof of your grade, the electronic record will stand. You will also have access to certain documents and files on Blackbaud; for example, you can listen to .mp3 files to help you prepare for oral and listening assessments.
