Trade Waste Team Leader

Main Purpose of Job

To lead the commercial arm of the Trade Waste Service with overall line management responsibility for the Trade Waste team. Togrow the trade waste business market share and maximise profitability through the identification of new business opportunities; effective marketing to potential customers and closing contract negotiations. To exhibit extemporary customer care and coordinate the development of the service whilst ensuring legal compliance of Ipswich Borough Council’s Trade (Waste Saver) & Domestic Waste Service.

Main Duties

  1. Manage, develop and promote the trade waste business to maximise profitability and success in the market place. Identify market position and new business opportunities, promote the business and maximise income generation, in line with current and new legislation.
  1. To identify, develop and manage the marketing and implementation of new or innovative offers and creatively develop services for the future, including alternative methods of service delivery. To lead the promotion and development of the Trade Waste business through service reviews, market analysis and waste audits maximising the service efficiency and effectiveness.
  1. Undertake site visits of existing and potential customers including making presentations, negotiation of contracts including rates, quotations and terms with a strong emphasis on excellent professional relationship management and customer retention/development.
  1. Lead and be responsible for the sales function for Waste Services including negotiating best disposal rates with external contractors, identifying and preparing tenders, and overseeing final accounts for customers. Ensuring that the best rates are obtained for disposal and the sale of recyclable materials, including glass, cardboard, plastics and any other recyclable items. Providing a waste management and recycling consultancy service including overseeing the Council’s Waste Audits which include conversion strategies, reduce landfill and increase profitability.
  2. Prepare publicity materials, including advertisements, press releases, leaflets, brochures and support the development the Wastesaver electronic media.
    Provide presentations to the press, council, industry partners and voluntary groups in order to present a positive image of the Council and its waste service.
  1. To lead and manage the Trade Waste team in line with Council HR policies, including work allocation, individual and team performance monitoring and management.
  1. To be responsible and accountable for the Trade Waste, budget including monitoring, dealing with income and expenditure procedures. Undertaking the preparation of estimates in accordance with the Council’s financial procedures. To ensure that the Trade Waste team successfully fulfil month end and annual close of accounts.
  1. Oversee credit control by actively pursuing customers for the non-payment of commercial waste service resulting in suspension or cancellation of service if required. To oversee customer contracts and contact customers with any discrepancies with resolution options.
  1. Manage health and safety within area of responsibility maintaining health, safety and welfare of employees and members of the public ensuring that employees are trained in, and adhere to safe working practices and environmental procedures. Monitor and undertake risk assessments in accordance with Health and Safety regulations, maintaining adequate records.
  1. Ensure that a positive image of the Council is projected when dealing with enquiries and working in the public domain.
  1. To be responsible for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in own specialist/professional area in order to remain abreast of new developments, local and national issues, case law and relevant legislation, also maintaining comprehensive CPD records.

Waste Services

The Waste service area employs 104 people, all of whom are actively engaged in achieving the Council’s corporate objective of providing best value, good quality services to Ipswich businesses, the public and visitors to the town.

The services we provide are:

Waste Management, Recycling and Communications

This team produces waste and recycling policy and continually works towards improving recycling behaviour in Ipswich in order to achieve the council’s target recycling rate. They are a creative team constantly producing new educational and promotional campaigns to increase recycling, reduce littering and change the environmental culture of the town.

Domestic Refuse Collection

The domestic refuse operational teams provide alternate week residual (black bins) and recycling (blue and brown bins) collections from householders and also a bulky waste collection service.

Wastesaver Business

The Wastesaver Business is a wholly owned council business which has contracts with approximately 1500 commercial customers in Ipswich to remove their trade waste, including recyclables. The business comprises a sales team and operational crews collecting a range of bins, bags and skips from schools and businesses across the town.

Street Cleaning

The operational team street cleansing team aim to keep Ipswich clean by providing litter picking, mechanical sweeping, graffiti removal, litter bin emptying and other cleaning services.

Facilities and Support Services

This small team provide facilities management for the Gipping House premises and a range of support services for all those who operate from this depot.
