Heritage education challenge for schools in 9 provinces

Nine schools representing each province have been selected through provincial eliminations to participate in the annual week long Heritage Outreach Education challenge which will be held at the Tsistsikama National Park in the Eastern Cape from 2 – 6 October 2012.

The programme is coordinated by the National Heritage Council (NHC) in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and the South African National Parks (SANPARKS). This challenging camp teaches learners about their heritage, culture, values of Ubuntu,history and personal confidence. It also exposes learners to an experiential learning of our multi-cultural nation.

The top three schools will walk away with book hamper prizes for their libraries to the value of R25,000, R15,000 and R10,000. The winners will be announced on Friday, 5 October 2012 at a ceremony on the Tsitsikama National Park. Last year’s prizes went toAdams College (KZN), Sekgutlong Secondary School (Free State) and Lekoa Shandu (Gauteng) from first to third position. Adv. Sonwabile Mancotywa, CEO of the NHC will present the prizes at an award ceremonytonight at Mokala National Park outside Kimberly.

The National Heritage Council of South Africa is a government institution that is responsible for the preservation of the country’s heritage. The important areas that the NHC focuses on are policy development for the sector to meet its transformation goals, public awareness and education, knowledge production in heritage subjects that were previously neglected, as well as making funding available to projects that place heritage as a socio-economic resource.
