GUIDANCE ON COMPLETING THE SURVEY FORM

  • The 9 week survey will run this year from Sunday 30stDecember 2012 to Saturday 2ndMarch 2013. For each week of the survey, record the maximum number of each species seen at any one time. This is the peak count and should be entered in the appropriate week number column for that species. For example, if you see 5 House Sparrows at one time in your garden on Tuesday and10 House Sparrows on Thursday, the peak count would be 10 for that week.
  • Only birds ACTUALLY LANDING in the garden, its trees or on your house, should be counted - birds only flying over, or perchedbeyond your garden should not be included. Please count all the birds of a species in your garden at any one time, and not just those using feeding stations.
  • If you are unable to record for a few weeks during the survey period, simply leave those weeks blank orstrike through them.
  • The recording form has been pre-printed with the species most likely to be seen, and additional blank spaces have been included for birds not on this list; please don’t divide species into male and female birds.
  • Please give details of how you identified rare birds, or those which don’t usually visit gardens.
  • Participants can devote as little or as much time to the survey as they like.

New observers are always welcome - if you know of someone who is interested in taking part, please let me have their name and address, and I will be delighted to send them a form.

Please don’t forget to fill in your name & addressto ensure that you get a copy of the 2013 Survey Report and a form for next year, and to enable me to contact you in the event of a query. It will help if you return the completed survey form as soon as possible after the end of the survey period, and preferably no later than 31st March to:
