OCR DEAR COLLEAGUE LETTER (2011)

"Dear colleague" letter (April 4, 2011) from Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, Russlynn Ali provides guidance and examples about Title IX requirements and how they relate to sexual harassment and sexual violence, discusses proactive efforts schools can take to prevent sexual violence and educate employees and students, and provides examples of the types of remedies schools and OCR may use to respond to sexual violence.

OCR DEAR COLLEAGUE LETTER (2010)

“Dear Colleague” letter (October 26, 2010) from Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, Russlynn Ali, concerning recipients' obligations to protect students from student-on-student harassment on the basis of sex; race, color and national origin; and disabilityclarifies the relationship between bullying and discriminatory harassment, provides examples of harassment, and illustrates how a school should respond in each case.

STARS exists to serve schools and communities by providing prevention, intervention, and treatment services addressing bullying, substance abuse, violence, and social and emotional barriers to success. The website details programs and services available in the Nashville, TN area.

STOPBULLYING.GOV

StopBullying.gov coordinates closely with the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Steering Committee, an interagency effort led by the Department of Education that works to coordinate policy, research, and communications on bullying topics. The Federal Partners include representatives from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Defense, Education, Health and Human Services, the Interior, and Justice, as well as the Federal Trade Commission and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. StopBullying.gov provides information from these agencies on what bullying is, what cyber bullying is, who is at risk, and how individuals, schools, and communities can prevent and respond to bullying.

STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS: CREATING POSITIVE CONDITIONS FOR LEARNING

For Student Assistance Programming, or SAP, to succeed in an individual schoolsetting, it has to be adaptable in its scope and flexible in its implementation. Virginia school divisions and their elementary, middle, and high schools vary widelyin size, location, and student demographics. One school‘s workable approach maywell be distinct from that of another school nearby. This manual, developed by Virginia educators and administrators with practical SAP experience in collaboration with the Office of Student Services of the Virginia Department of Education, reflects that reality. Divisions and their schools will find information and technical guidance theycan use to craft and initiate SAP efforts they design and put to work in accordancewith their needs.
