Course Description: This course concentrates on the legal aspects of business ownership and management. Legal issues will include contracts, sales, consumer law, agency and employment law, personal and real property, risk management, environmental law and government effects on business. The impact of ethics on business operations will be studied. International business principles are infused in the standards for Legal Environment of Business. Mastery of the standards through project –based leaning and leadership development activities for FBLA will help prepare students with a competitive edge for the global marketplace. Legal terminology will be emphasized.

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS
STUDENT PROGRESS / Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester. The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered.Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY / Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook.
HOMEWORK / Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience. Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. It should be considered the possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB.
MAKE-UP WORK
DUE TO ABSENCES / When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA.
SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS / All school rules apply as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Those not included are outlined in the course syllabus and by the classroom instructor. Arrive on time to class, treat others with respect, be prepared to learn, no profanity, sleeping, food, cheating, keep room clean at all times; respect others time, no electronic devices, sagging pants or revealing or obscene clothing. Stated simply, follow the Student Code of Conduct Booklet.
MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES / Textbook, Business Law binder, Business Law folder (housed in classroom) in specific location. Pencils/Pens (daily); USB flash Drive and Internet Agreement signed by a parent. Other materials may be needed as the semester begins. Students will participate in a field trip, A Journey Through Justice” sponsored by the State Bar of Georgia. Students will be required to create a Vision Board.
EXTRA HELP / Tutorials will be held every Thursday from 7:40-8:10am as arranged with the instructor. Additionally tutorials will be scheduled if necessary to meet individual needs.
PARENTS AS PARTNERS / “IT TAKES A VILLAGE”. Let’s help each other to enhance the culture of excellence at Cedar Grove High School. I am always available to meet the needs of our students and their families. If possible, please call regarding your concerns after 3:10 when all classes are over. It makes it more convenient to speak confidentially and freely while accessing your student’s records.
What is the 20/20 rule: Students must remain in the classroom for the first 20 minutes after the bell ring for class to begin (emergencies only) and cannot leave the classroom during the last 20 minutes of the class period (emergencies only).
Please discuss the importance of the proper school attire. Sagging pants without belts are unacceptable in the school environment.
Long Term Culmination Project

Assessment (EOPA / Mock Trial is due for presentation at the end of the semester.
Short Project: Create a non-profit organization.
Students will complete a Career Project and other activities relating to career development/choices; life skills; projects and other projects from the Interactive Binder associated with the Career Tech Department’s program of success. FBLA principals will be taught in all classes on an ongoing basis.
End of Pathway Assessments will administered to those students completing both Business Law and Entrepreneurship. The test: Small Business Development Pathway Assessment

Testing Dates: March 2017 or as announced. Students can retake the test within the time allotted, again on a TBA basis.
