A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND DR. WALTER A. MCPHAIL OF MAULDIN, WHO OWNS AND OPERATES A TREE FARM IN BELTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, UPON BEING NAMED SOUTH CAROLINA TREE FARMER OF THE YEAR FOR 2001.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are very pleased to learn that Dr. Walter A. McPhail has been named South Carolina Tree Farmer of the Year for 2001; and

Whereas, Dr. McPhail is a resident of Mauldin. He also owns and operates a 1,025 acre tree farm in Anderson County in the town of Belton, and is a widely respected veterinarian, who was named South Carolina’s Veterinarian of the Year for 2000; and

Whereas, his love of nature and appreciation of the environment were strongly established at childhood. Dr. McPhail was taught the importance of conservation by his father, a district conservationist for the United States Department of Agriculture, and by his mother, an avid gardener and flower show judge; and

Whereas, Dr. McPhail’s wife, Barbara, and their two children perform a multitude of tasks on the farm including tree marking, contacting buyers, sales, followup on cutting and marking property lines, selecting herbicides and tree planting contractors, construction of waterbars, and seeding roadbeds; and

Whereas, Dr. McPhail has completed Master Tree Farmer Courses #1 and #2, several intensive silviculture courses offered by the University of Georgia and Clemson University, and is a certified prescribed fire manager. Mrs. McPhail and their children are also Master Tree Farmers; and

Whereas, he was instrumental in forming the Anderson County Forest Landowners Association and has twice served as president of the group. He has also been site coordinator for the Master Tree Farmer program in Greenville, has used his forestland for Master Tree Farmer tours, and has assisted forestry students in management plan courses; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to recognize and commend this multitalented South Carolinian upon his receipt of this truly deserved award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members recognize and commend Dr. Walter A. McPhail of Mauldin who owns and operates a tree farm in Belton, South Carolina, upon being named South Carolina Tree Farmer of the Year for 2001.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Walter A. McPhail.
