SNT Officers attend address to offer advice after online scam reported.

On Wednesday 1st February 2017, a female reported that she had possibly been the victim of an online scam. PC Jane Cowan and PCSO Mal Goddard attended her address to offer advice and reassurance. On arrival the officers established that an unknown male had contacted the victim by telephone, claiming to be from an international software company. The lady initially dismissed his claims but after repeated calls she passed on some of her details to the caller.

On thinking the matter over, the next time the caller contacted her she refused to give any further details; at this point the caller became abusive and made threats that he would "lock up" her computer unless she told him her bank details.

The victim hung up and, after a small delay, then made contact with her bank and, having firmly established that she was talking to her bank, made sure that staff at the bank were aware of the attempted scam and would monitor her account to ensure there was no suspicious activity. She then found that there was a problem with her laptop, which she was unable to fix.The Officers took details of the scam but it is unlikely that the offender will be located as the telephone number they were using was withheld. Checks on the laptop were conducted and the officers were able to re-start it, which seemed to clear the problem.

The victim was very grateful for the assistance and was given further advice of what to do if there were any follow up calls or any calls from other potential scammers.
