Pat Mackesey Memorial Scholarship Application

ABOUT PAT

Born in Madison in 1958, Pat graduated from Monona Grove High School in 1976. But early on he developed a love for football, using his large stature to play offensive tackle for Monona’s first-ever Pee Wee team of fifth and sixth-graders in 1969. Pat was best known for his 30 years as a volunteer coach in the Monona Pee Wee football program in addition tocoaching over 15 years in the Monona Grove youth football program. Pat cherished the ability to work with children, beginning his coaching career long before he was a father. He planned to continue coaching the Pee Wee League through its 50th anniversary in 2019. One of the greatest tributes to Pat was seeing former players come up to him and receive his patented big bear hug years after they had moved on from the youth programs. Despite his busy volunteer schedule Pat still managed to attend Monona School board and Cottage Grove Village board meetings. Keeping with his life mission of giving back to the community, Pat was elected Village of Cottage Grove President in 2015. Pat was a self-made entrepreneur who owned and developed several businesses in the Monona and Madison area.

Those of us, who had the honor of knowing Pat personally, felt there was no better way to honor Pat’s legacy than by providing a scholarship to a Monona Grove graduate who emulates the same type of community service drive and desires that defined Pat. Need some help or a favor? Pat was there. Need a friend? Pat was there.Although there are academic requirements in this application, this is not a scholarship based on academics. When you answer the questions, it will become very apparent that this is about being involved, community support and people.
