COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course isdesigned to prepare students for careers in the food and fiber industry by providing opportunity to learn, reinforce, apply and transfer knowledge and skills in a scientific setting. Students will conduct field experiments, laboratory investigations, or approved supervised agricultural experience programs. Students will also have an opportunity to take the skills learned in Floral Design and apply them to many other aspects in the Floral Industry.

Notebooks:
Each student will be required to keep a notebook that will be graded at the end of each nine weeks for a Major grade. The student will need a 3 ring binders or folder w/ brads. A table of contents will be provided to the student for them to keep up with his or her returned assignments.
Record Book
Each student will be furnished with an online record book to be completed by the student bi-monthly. Class time will be given to work on record books, and they may be graded at anytime and will be graded at the end of each nine weeks and semester for a Summative grade. The record book serves as the student’s method of tracking their Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE).
In an effort to maintain the hands on curriculum of this class and provide your student with the benefits within this class, an $80 lab fee is required ($40 per semester). This $80 fee is required to cover the cost fresh floral material, supplies and plant materials. Checks may be payable to:MWHS-Floral Department
It is strongly recommended that students join the Magnolia West High School FFA Chapter. There are many leadership and career development activities and events that directly relate to this Advance Plant & Soil Science class, which will greatly enhance your student's high school experiences. Participation in these events will be limited to FFA members. FFA dues are $25.00 annually and may be included with your lab fee payment.
Grading Policy
While grades are not the only indication of the amount of learning that has taken place; they are an effective measurement tool and are necessary to evaluate student progress. There will be many grades taken in this class. These grades will be based upon student creativity and ingenuity, daily classroom work, written and practical test, labs, and floral arrangement techniques. The specific grading components of this class will be determined on a weighted average basis with specific categories that relate to this class.
Formative Grades: Daily work, Quizzes and Completion 40%
Summative Grades: Record Book, Labs, Projects, How-ToDesigns and Test 60%
