Hours: M-Th 8:00am-9:00pm, Friday 8:00am-4:00pm, Saturday 9:00am-1:00pm.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to understand and apply the following (summarized) concepts: perform the fundamental operations on whole numbers, fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals; apply the order of operations; write and use ratios and proportions; convert percents, fractions and decimals; write and solve percent problems as equations and proportions; calculate simple and compound interest; use and convert U.S. and metric systems of measurement; and apply analytical reasoning and problem solving techniques to a variety of situations.
TEACHING METHODS:
The first few minutes of each class will be spent on questions from previously assigned homework problems. Students are expected to be in class on time and ready to ask questions. The majority of class time will consist of lecture, teacher demonstration, student participation, pop quizzes and tests.
EVALUATION TECHNIQUES:
Students will earn their grade in this course by accumulating points from:
Quizzes 50
Homework assignments 100
3 tests – 100 points each 300
Attendance/Participation grade 100
Comprehensive final exam 200
750 total points possible
Homework
Homework will be assigned out of the textbook. ALL work must be shown on each problem to be given full credit for the assignment.
An additional homework supplement is using an internet based program called MyLabsPlus, http://tulsacc.mylabsplus.com . It is a supplement to the student textbook that provides some wonderful resources. Not only will students find homework, quizzes and tests, but students will find an e-book, videos, tutorials, and other resources.
For registration, each student will need their access code found inside the MyLabsPlus folder, TCC’s zip code (74133) and you will need your Blackboard login information.
Homework problems will be assigned each day over the lessons taught that day. Students should make sure to complete each day’s assignment(s) BEFORE the next class period so they are ready to ask questions and move on to the new material. Homework assignments will be handed in at the beginning of the class on the day it is due.
The calendar lists the lessons to be covered in class each day. If I need to adjust or correct the calendar, students should make changes on the calendar and keep it current. These changes will be made during class and not always emailed, so make a friend in case of an absence.
Pop Quizzes
Pop quizzes can be given at any time and can cover any material that has been covered in class or in homework. Students will not be allowed to use notes or books, etc. during pop quizzes given in class. Calculators may not be shared during pop quizzes. Use of calculators will NOT be allowed on pop quizzes that cover material from Chapter 1 through Chapter 4. If students are absent on the day of a pop quiz, students will not be able to make up the pop quiz. Pop quizzes will not be given early or late. Students will not be given more time if students arrive to class in the middle of a pop quiz.
Tests
There will be three tests as noted on the semester calendar. Students will not be allowed to use notes or books, etc. during tests. Calculators may not be shared during tests. Use of calculators will NOT be allowed on tests until after Chapter 4 is completed. If students are absent on the day of a test, students will not be able to make up the test.
Attendance/Participation Grade
At the beginning of the semester, each student will start with 100 points for attendance. Three points will be subtracted from this score for each time a student was absent or missed the majority of a class period. Also, points are possible for participation; asking and answering questions will only improve this score.
Final Exam
There will be a comprehensive final exam. Students will not be allowed to use notes, books, etc during the exam. Calculators may not be shared during this exam.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKE-UP WORK:
No make-up pop quizzes will be given.
No make-up tests will be given.
If a student does have an unavoidable emergency that keeps them from attending class on a day we have a test, I will replace a student’s lowest test score with the final exam score, if it improves a student’s grade. I reserve the right to ask for proof of circumstance.
GRADING SCALE:
Course grades will be based on the percentage of possible points students have accumulated.
90 to 100% A
80 to 89% B
70 to 79% C
60 to 69% D
0 to 59% F
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is necessary for success in this course and will be taken at every class meeting. Students who are absent from class for any reason are responsible for material covered and for any assignments, announcements, or changes to the semester calendar. Students should become familiar with the TCC policy on attendance and withdrawal from courses. Unless students officially withdraw from this course in the registration office, students will earn a grade according to the evaluation procedure given in this syllabus.
*Do not miss a class because you have not finished the homework assignment. Bring the part you have finished for partial grade and receive attendance/participation points as well.
COURSE WITHDRAWAL:

Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Check the TCC Academic Calendar for deadlines. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student.
