The City of Jackson

The City of Jackson is located in the heart of California’s historic Mother Lode, forty-five miles east of Sacramento and Stockton. Jackson blends the ambiance of a gold rush era downtown district and Victorian era neighborhoods with modern shopping centers and subdivisions. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, church spires and oak tree covered hillsides lend to the community’s rural charm.

Jackson is a full-service general law city which serves as the county seat for Amador County. The residential population is 4,600 with daytime and weekend populations of up to 15,000. A full-time staff of 30 employees provide quality and customer friendly police, fire, public works, community development, parks, water/sewer utility and recreation services.

This position, and five other paid positions, were made possible by the voters of Amador County when Measure M was approved in November of 2008.

The Jackson Fire Department

The Jackson Volunteer Fire Department’s history pre-dates the incorporation of the City in 1905, as the first fire company was formed in Jackson during the height of the Gold Rush era that brought settlers to the Sierra foothills. The department has been a cornerstone of the community and continues to provide critical emergency response services on the backs of the dedicated men and women volunteers, as well as the paid staff.

The Jackson Fire Department operates with five full-time line personnel working a 48/96 shift schedule. These members are supported by our twenty plus dedicated volunteers, spending countless hours away from their families training and responding to calls, in order to protect their community.

In 2016, the department responded to a total of 1,540 calls for service, including 1,024 medical calls, 252 public assistance, 145 traffic collisions, 103 fire related calls and 16 hazardous materials incidents. Over the past few years, the department has utilized grant funds to replace all of the self-contained breathing apparatus and purchase new personal protective equipment.
