Press Release N° 16
THE GREAT EVENTS OF RIMINI COFFEE EXPO
In the South foyer five days of championships, tasting sessions, conferences and live shows.
Rimini,15th January 2015 – The heart of Rimini Fiera, the wonderful South foyer, will be filled with the aroma of coffee during SIGEP 2015 (17-21 January). The culminating events of SIGEP COFFEE EXPO will be concentrated in the huge space at the South entrance: the CIBC, CILA, CICS Italian Barista Championships along with the new BREWERS CUP, a speciality in which Italy’s Rubens Gardelli came second in 2014 world rankings.
The events will be inaugurated precisely by the Brewers Cup, on Saturday 17th January, with the Italian World Brewers Cup Championship valid for the WBCC. Six participants will compete using the brewing method used in Nordic countries, United Stated and Asiatic countries, which is also spreading in Italy. The coffees will be brewed by the contestants with the so-called manual “pour-over” methods, i.e. with a filtering system where the barista manually pours the hot water
on to the ground coffee, which will be held by a filter. The participants, who will prepare 3 beverages (one to be served to each of the three sensorial judges), will have to try not only to obtain a good coffee, but also to prepare it correctly with a solids content that will be measured by the judges with a “refractometer”.
On Sunday 18th and Monday 19th January there will be the CIBC Italian Cafeteria Barista Championship valid for the WBC (World Barista Championship). 12 participants are foreseen and the competition, valid for admission to the World Barista Championship, consists in preparing in 15 minutes, four espressos, four cappuccinos and four personalized non-alcoholic beverages based on espresso, to be served to a panel of judges formed by expert tasters. The contest’s rules are the same as the WBC (World Barista Championship), a real “Barista Olympics”, a competition with the patronage of the SCAE (Speciality Coffee Association of Europe) and SCAA (Speciality Coffee Association of America).
On Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th January, there will be the CILA Italian Latte Art Championship, valid for the WLA World Latte Art Championship. Ten participants will show their manual skills and artistic talent. The participants will be required to pass various stages through to the finals, which will be held between the six best contestants. In a maximum time of eight minutes, they will have to prepare two identical café au lait, two identical hot milks with a dash of coffee and two identical personalized beverages to be presented to two visual judges, a technical judge and a jury chief.
On Tuesday 20th January, there will be the CICS Italian Coffee in Good Spirits Championship, valid for the WCIGS (World Coffee in Good Spirits Championship). Ten participants will compete in two distinct stages, a preliminary and final stage. During the preliminary round, contestants have five minutes for the preparation and eight minutes time to produce four beverages: two (identical) alcohol-based hot coffees and two (identical) alcohol-based cold coffees. The beverages must be based on a theme connected with the nation hosting the Championship. The six best contestants will compete in the final round, in which they are required to produce four beverages:
two Irish Coffees and two hot or cold alcohol-based coffees.
As well as the competitions there is another important event scheduled for Sunday 18th January, at 11:30 am in the SCAE Room (South Foyer), entitled Coffee to be eaten… sustainably, a professional seminar on Coffee’s Investment in Quality and Creativity in Patisserie and Catering. The aim of the event, a real live show with recipes, tasting sessions, innovative and “eco” ideas to use coffee as a beverage and as an ingredient. The event, organized by Pasticceria Internazionale at SIGEP 2015, along with Costadoro, intends highlighting mouth-watering combinations of coffee, pastry and cuisine, in order to provide an input for attendees to take back to points of sale and exploit their bar and products to the utmost.
From Saturday 17th to Tuesday 20th January there will also be the SCAE Educational events, where coffee means advanced training. This is an initiative that promotes excellence and more in general the culture of coffee, from the plants in the countries of origin through to the preparation of the beverage and its tasting.
