THE CHALICE

The weekly Sunday Bulletin of St. John’s Episcopal Church

March 22, 2015

FROM THE DEACON:

The observance of Lent is marked by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. Some of us have given up certain things for Lent while others have taken on new disciplines. Our weekly Lenten reading and study series has taught us about the practice and experience of Centering Prayer.

We take on these practices and disciplines of Lent to help move us to a place where we can hear from God and where real change can happen, to help us trust our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to help us know the power of his resurrection. Lent focuses us on the centrality of Jesus Christ and the salvation he brings. We will soon be celebrating his Resurrection.

Jesus Christ is central to our faith. Each week we join together in the words of the Nicene Creed saying:

“We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man.”

These words are powerful – through him all things were made; for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he became human flesh. But he did even more, he became obedient even unto death. He died and rose again for us. All this he did to give us new life in the here and now and eternal life in the world to come. We can overcome because Jesus overcame.

I like the way theologian and author Kathryn Tanner puts it when she writes: “Jesus does not

overcome temptation until he is tempted, does not overcome fear of death until he feels it, at which

time this temptation and fear are assumed by the Word. Jesus does not heal death until the Word

assumes death when Jesus dies; Jesus does not conquer sin until he assumes or bears the sin of others by suffering death at their hands.”

Jesus overcomes. He heals. He conquers. And, that is what we celebrate on Easter Day. May our lives be firmly fixed on him as we look to that day of Resurrection.
