2018 SEC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

MAY 22-27 | HOOVER METROPOLITAN STADIUM | HOOVER, ALA.

| GAME 5 | TEXAS A&M 7, GEORGIA 0 | NOTES AND QUOTES |

GEORGIA POST-GAME NOTES

  • Today’s tournament opener for Georgia marks its 24th all-time appearance in the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs are now 28-44 in this event.
  • The matchup between Georgia and Texas A&M was the first meeting between the two schools in the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs have now faced every school but Missouri at the tournament.
  • The loss to Texas A&M extended UGA’s losing streak to seven-consecutive SEC Tournament pairings dating back to 2012. The Bulldogs’ streak started in 2011 when they were eliminated by Florida to finish third in that year’s tourney. UGA then fell in both games during its time in Hoover in 2012 and suffered losses in single contests in 2014, 2016 and 2017 before today.
  • C.J. Smith made his fourth start of the season and his 13thappearance overall in today’s game.
  • Smith’s six strikeouts are a new career-high total for the freshman. His previous high was four, which he recorded in game two of the doubleheader with Kentucky on April 14.
  • The freshman starter did not issue a walk in his outing for the sixth time this season. Smith’s most recent walkless appearance came in his May 8 start against Georgia Tech. In that game, he threw 5.0 innings and earned his first win of the season.
  • Aaron Schunk’s 0-for-4 morning ended his hitting streak at 22 games overall. The 22-game streak was the longest active streak in the SEC and ranks third on the UGA leaderboards for longest hitting streak.
  • Keegan McGovern’s one walk moved him into sole possession of fourth place on the Georgia career walks list with 133 free passes over four seasons.

GEORGIA COACH SCOTT STRICKLIN

On facing Texas A&M’s pitching staff . . .

“Lacy was really good, but he did make a couple of mistakes, and we didn’t take advantage of it, and their hitters were able to take advantage of some of the mistakes that we made. First of all I thought (Cason) Sherrod was awfully good. I’m sure [Rob Childress] is gonna comment on how good he was, and that may have been as good as he’s been all year. All in all, you have to tip your cap to their pitching staff. I thought they were really good today, with good defense behind them.”

On continuing SEC Tournament play Thursday . . .

“There’s no question we’ve got a tough team. Every team you’re gonna play in this tournament is going to be a really good team. So, we’ll just figure out who we’re playing, but we have to be aggressive. Chase Adkins is going to get the start. We have to play defense behind him, we’ve got to have better at-bats and just overall play better baseball. We didn’t play our best baseball today and a lot had to do with Texas A&M. Texas A&M was really good today, and they deserve a lot of credit.”

GEORGIA SS CAM SHEPHERD

“After the first inning I saw a lot of fastballs. That last at bat, they were trying to attack me with fastballs. He left one over the plate, and if you look at the pitches before that, they were very, very good pitches. I got one over the plate though, and I was able to drive it in the gap.”
