Free College Education

By: Katie Conn

Have you ever wanted to receive free college credit? Tessa Jennings, Katie Conn, and KandraStegall received free college credit hours by taking a course with Mrs. Hayslip after school two days a week. Current Food and Energy Issues was a class offered for students to take. The students that participated in this class read articles based on current agriculture and energy issues and discussed and presented articles in class. The class was offered through Morehead State University’s Dual Credit program, it was worth three credit hours and was eligible to any student, provided that they had a composite ACT score of 18 and a cumulative GPA minimum of 3.4. Also this class counts as a general education requirement at Morehead State. Katie Conn, a senior that completed the course said, “This class was a wonderful experience and I learned many new things about current issues that affect agriculture. I would highly recommend this class to any student that is interested in agriculture.”

The class will be offered again next year, further information will be provided by Mrs. Hayslip.

From the Woods, to the Plate

This year after hunting season, The Rowan County FFA held the 3rd annual Beast Feast on Friday, Dec. 16th 2011 in high school agriculture shop. This annual dinner consists of food made from deer, fowl and other wild game.

When asked Kyle Stamper said, “The meal was good and I gained a lot of great memories.”

The wild game dishes were judged by alumni members Matt Kidd and Ryan Thomas, as well as Mrs. Hayslip and Mr. Griffin. Awards were given in the areas of deer, fowl and other wild game. Katie Conn placed 1st in the venison category, Tyler Fraley placed 1st with his turkey dish in the fowl category, and Amber Arnett placed 1st in the other wild game category and received top dish over all.

Zach Wallace commented, “We had a great time. It is like we are one big family.”

Donating for the Good

By: MalieOney

Have you ever felt the excitement of giving back to the community? The FFA members of the Rowan County Senior High School chapter have. The FFA members donated money to the angel tree program, and donated a box of fruit on December 16th, 2011 to the back pack program.

When Mrs. Hayslip brought up the idea of the angel tree program, the FFA members were on board. The members felt the excitement that our advisor did to give back to the community, as well as to the backpack program by donating fruit!

Tessa Jennings Community Service Chairman had to say about the backpack program, “It was a really great experience to donate fruit to the backpack program, because it is very rare that they have the fresh fruit to give out.”

The backpack program helps students that are not as accessible to food items as others are. The FFA members and advisor donated fruit for the students to take home for their families. The Rowan County FFA members are happy to help and excited to donate more!

Reindeer Games

By: Katie Conn and MalieOney

Seeing children have joy in their eyes keeps Mrs. Hayslip’s Agriculture Leadership class coming back. On December 16th, 2011 students from the leadership class completed the second PALS lesson, which had a holiday theme.

Zach Wallace, Kyle Stamper, and Robbie Jennings taught the PALS lesson to Mrs. Carter’s class; students enjoyed hearing a reading about the importance of reindeer in Santa’s delivery of Christmas presents. One of the student’s from Mrs. Carter’s class said, “I enjoy the activities best when the PALS visit.”

The class also made edible reindeer from pretzels,

marshmallows, twizzlers, and chocolate chips. Mrs. Hayslip’s class also prepared bags of reindeer food for students to place outside on Christmas Eve.

“Even though students may be absent, we have other FFA members that love to have help with their pal, which gives all of us an opportunity to get to know more personalities,” said junior PAL Kyle Stamper.

FFA Pays

By: Ben Lewis

Remember how it felt Christmas morning hoping and praying for that amazing gift? Well that’s how Ben Lewis felt before he found out that he won the $400 livestock grant to purchase a beef heifer of his choice.

On January 10, 2012 Ben Lewis was contacted by the Kentucky State Sale of Champions of his win. He will have until June 1 to make his purchase. “Mrs. Hayslip quoted that Ben Lewis is a hard working young man who is well deserving of the grant money.” When asked what he thought about receiving the grant Lewis said “I’m so thankful I have been given this opportunity.”
