Balanced Assessment: Where Am I Now?
Evaluate your teaching practice for each of the statements below according to the following scale:
1 = I don’t do or understand this.
2 = I do this infrequently or understand it to a very limited degree.
3 = I do this sometimes or understand it somewhat.
4 = I do this frequently or understand it well.
5 = I do this on an ongoing basis or understand this fully and comprehensively.
Rating / Survey Statement1. I understand the elements of a balanced approach to assessment, including types of assessments, their purposes, and the users & uses of assessment information.
2. I understand and can articulate to others the differences between formative assessment processes (assessment for learning), and summative assessments (assessment of learning).
3. I can help our school’s teachers and administrators to analyze our current assessment practices to determine the degree to which they represent a balanced approach within a purposeful and productive system.
4. I understand the relationship between assessment and student motivation, and can use assessment in my classroom to build student confidence.
5. I understand how formative processes / assessment for learning strategies can help students answer three questions about their learning: Where Am I Going, Where Am I Now, and How Do I Close the Gap?
6. I understand the necessity of clear learning targets, and can articulate the targets my students are to hit.
7. I can transform learning targets into dependable assessments that yield accurate information.
8. I can consistently use classroom assessment information to revise and guide teaching and learning.
9. I can provide feedback to my students that is frequent, descriptive, constructive, and immediate, helping students know how to plan and improve.
10. I can help my students actively, consistently, and effectively become involved in assessment, including managing their own learning through the skills of self-assessment.
