Weekly Insert

Sunday 17 May 2015 – Sunday after Ascension

We have made some adjustments to this insert which we hope will make things easier to follow but please note that the yellow booklets at the back contain the complete Service, including the hymns and readings.

Opening Hymn

Christ triumphant, ever reigning,

Saviour, Master, King!

Lord of heaven, our lives sustaining,

hear us as we sing:

Yours the glory and the crown,

the high renown, the eternal name!

Word incarnate, truth revealing,

Son of Man on earth!

power and majesty concealing

by your humble birth:Refrain

Suffering servant, scorned, ill-treated,

victim crucified!

death is through the cross defeated,

sinners justified:Refrain

Priestly king, enthroned for ever

high in heaven above!

sin and death and hell shall never

stifle hymns of love:Refrain

So, our hearts and voices raising

through the ages long,

ceaselessly upon you gazing,

this shall be our song:Refrain

Michael Saward (1932 - 2015)

Tune: Guiting Power

The service continues with Prayers of Approach (p.2)

Collect

Lord of time fulfilled,

who was not born an angel

but walked the common earth:

with those you called by the lakeside

may we share your mission

to bring good news to all,

to let the world know

that God is among us;

through Jesus Christ, the one who reigns.

Amen.

Reading Psalm 126(Old Testament, page584), read by Judith Pitchforth

Gradual Hymn

1
Lord of beauty, thine the splendor
shown in earth and sky and sea,
burning sun and moonlight tender,
hill and river, flower and tree:
lest we fail our praise to render
touch our eyes that they may see. / 3
Lord of life, alone sustaining
all below and all above,
Lord of love, by whose ordaining
sun and stars sublimely move:
in our earthly spirits reigning,
lift our hearts that we may love.
2
Lord of wisdom, whom obeying
mighty waters ebb and flow,
while unhasting, undelaying,
planets on their courses go:
in thy laws thyself displaying,
teach our minds thyself to know. / 4
Lord of beauty, bid us own thee,
Lord of truth, our footsteps guide,
till as Love our hearts enthrone thee,
and, with vision purified,
Lord of all, when all have known thee,
thou in all art glorified.

Cyril A. Alington (1872 - 1955)

Tune: Rhuddlan

Gospel: Mark 1:12 - 24(New Testament, page33)

Alleluia, Christ is risen!

He is risen indeed, Alleluia!

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

Glory to you, O Lord.

At the end :

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon – Revd. Michael Bayley

Service continues with Affirming Faith (p. 5)

Prayers of Solidarity & Concern, led by Pat Hunt

The service continues with the Peace (p. 6)

Offertory Hymn

We come as guests invited
when Jesus bids us dine.
His friends on earth united
to share the bread and wine.
The bread of life is broken,
the wine is freely poured
for us, in solemn token
of Christ our dying Lord.
We eat and drink, receiving
from Christ the grace we need,
and in our hearts believing
on him by faith we feed;
with wonder and thanksgiving
for love that knows no end,
we find in Jesus living
our ever-present friend.

One bread is ours for sharing,
one single fruitful vine,
our fellowship declaring
renewed in bread and wine:
renewed, sustained and given
by token, sign and word,
the pledge and seal of heaven,
the love of Christ our Lord.

Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926)

Tune: Ewing

The service continues with Abiding (p. 6)

During Communion the choir will singUbi Caritas by Maurice Durufle (1902 - 1986)

Hymn

PRAISE BE for life, for resurrection grace

renewal breaking through in every place.

Praise be for life, for death and letting go,

for seeds released, free then to root and grow.

Praise be for love. Love’s gifts shall make us whole,

its grace implanted in each living soul.

Praise be for love whose power to touch and heal

restores, transforms and points to all that’s real.

Praise be for light, its ever radiant spark

embracing and encompassing the dark.

Praise be for light, the light of mutual love,

its flame within, without, below, above.

Praise be for truth, the truth that sets us free

in openness and trust for all to see.

Praise be for truths, diverse yet valid all

to those who act upon the Spirit’s call.

Praise be for hope that counters dark despair,

that looks for signs of life in ground that’s bare.

Praise be for hope, enabling us by grace

to see the Other in another’s face.

Eve Saunders

Tune: Woodlands
