When presenting a journal it will be expected that you use the following PICO method. Look at the journal you are presenting and answer the following four questions. PICO stands for:
Patient/population: who or what?
Intervention: how?
Comparision: what is the alternative? (There may be none)
Outcome: what are you trying to accomplish/measure/improve/effect?
- You need to present the journal ONLY using the above four lines and the discussion will follow. Try and pick relevant, interesting articles that show how you might change your practice. PICO examples can be found at and

Hospital posts: SHO assessment form
The trainee should have this form completed by each consultant for whom he/she has worked. Usually this assessment should be shared with the consultant, but, if a consultant wishes to submit a confidential report, a separate copy of this form can be had from the training programme office.
Note to hospital consultants:
Each trainee in the Cork General Practice Training Programme must now satisfy certain criteria before a certificate of satisfactory completion of training can be issued by the programme. This certificate is essential for the trainee to become a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners, or to practice in any state-funded medical scheme. One component of the assessment is the provision by each hospital teacher of a satisfactory report on the trainee's performance. This report should be filled out at the end of the trainee's time with you, and has three components:
- certification of attendance,
- general assessment of abilities and performance,
- skills specific to the post.
You will be asked to certify these three components by signing a certificate of satisfactory completion for each trainee at the end of his/her time with you.
If the trainee cannot produce these documents the GP Programme cannot give a certificate of satisfactory completion, with serious consequences for the trainee’s future career. We would ask you to ensure that all trainees attending your post have the relevant forms completed before the end of the post.
Further copies of all forms are available on request from the training programme office at 4902312
