CU8/F308 Contribute to the development of the knowledge and practice of others
Elements of competence
CU8.1Enable others to solve problems and tackle issues arising in practice
CU8.2Enable others to learn and benefit from one’s experience
Summary
This unit describes standards for contributing to the development of the knowledge and practice of others. The first element focuses on enabling others to solve problems and tackle issues. Here the worker uses their knowledge and experience go guide others towards solutions. The problems and issues may be interpersonal, organisational or practice based. The second element focuses on enabling others to learn and benefit from one’s own experience. This is based on the belief that workers have a duty to pass on their learning, either in a supervisory capacity or as one colleague to another, in this way, practice as a whole can develop. ‘Others’ may be practitioners from the same discipline, those from other disciplines, colleagues working in the same organisation or in another, or any one else with whom the worker comes into contact.
A key focus of this unit is continual professional development which provides teams and individuals with added interest, information and motivation to undertake their work. It also captures those situations where individual workers are asked to provide a different perspective to others on a particular problem, usually due to their different experience or background.
Who this unit is aimed at
The unit is designed to be applicable to all workers in the health and social care sector who are accountable for their own actions and have the responsibility for passing their knowledge on to others.
Principles of good practice
A major focus within this unit is the responsibility to contribute to the development of others either through helping them solve problems and tackle issues or through enabling them to learn from the one’s own experience.
Relationship to other units
This unit relates to other units on development of self and teams - CU9 on effective team working and CU10 on contributing to the effectiveness of work practice. This unit is intended to reflect the greater demands of those who take full responsibility for their own development.
This unit also appears as unit 1.2 in the National Occupation Standards for Professional Activity in Health Promotion and Care.
Place in the SVQ framework
This unit occurs in the following qualification: Care Level 4
Evidence Requirements for this unit
You must provide your assessor with evidence for all the Performance Criteria and all aspects of Range and Knowledge. The evidence must be provided in the following ways, taking account of any Special Considerations which may be noted below:
Special Considerations
None.
1Direct Observation
Your assessor must observe you in real work activities which provide at least some of the evidence for each element in this unit. During these observations you will meet many of the Performance Criteria (PCs) and as many aspects of the Range Categories as possible.
PCs which might not be observed by your assessor include: CU8.1.8, CU8.2.6.
You can, of course, cover these PCs and aspects of range during the observations if the opportunity arises.
2Other types of evidence of your performance and knowledge
Your assessor will also want to see other evidence to feel confident that you can consistently repeat this standard of work and to cover those performance criteria and aspects of range which are not met during the observations. They will also want to see evidence that you know, understand and can apply in practice the knowledge which is listed in the specification. Your assessor may decide that you have already demonstrated some knowledge and understanding when they observe you working.
You will need to agree, and review an assessment plan with your assessor so that you can collect sufficient evidence to show that you are competent and meet the requirements of the unit. You will need to discuss with your assessor what will be acceptable. Types of evidence could include:
- products of your work
- statements from other people who have seen you working (witness testimony)
- simulations
- questioning, oral or written
- case studies, projects, assignments and reflective accounts of your work
Element CU8.1Enable others to solve problems and tackle issues arising in practice
Performance criteria / Type of evidence — state evidence index no(s) / DateDO / P / W / RA / Q / Other
1The extent to which people ma be in need of support to solve problems and tackle issues is carefully monitored
2Interventions are appropriate to the people concerned, the role of the worker, the needs of the activity the location and the time
3The nature and extent of the problems and issues are explored in an appropriate manner with the people concerned
4Resources allocated to enabling people to solve problems and tackle issues are justifiable given their nature and other work demands
5Differing perceptions of the problem and issues are analysed and set out
6Constructive suggestions are offered to those involved as to how the problems and issues might be looked at in new ways
7Reasoning strategies appropriate to the problem are used to propose solutions
8Others are approached for their support about problems and issues beyond the worker’s competence
9Decision making strategies consider the full range of potential solutions and outcomes and are appropriate to the issues and problems concerned
10Solutions offered balance the competing interests of those involved and have the potential to succeed in the longer term
11Those involved in solving problems and tackling issues are encouraged to detail who will do what and by when

2Reasoning strategies:
a)analysis of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT)
b)appraisal of the options available
c)cost-benefit analysis
d)evidence from research, practice, legal decisions
Notes on this element
Performance criterion (4) means that the worker will need to balance a number of factors such as: the severity and criticality of the problem or issue with the risks inherent in it to being considered, the disruption which may result if it is not tackled (or if it is), the benefits in the short and long term for solving the problem and the effects which it might be having on others.
Element CU8.2Enable others to learn and benefit from one’s experience
Performance criteria / Type of evidence — state evidence index no(s) / DateDO / P / W / RA / Q / Other
1Adequate and appropriate opportunities for others to learn are identified and agreed
2Relevant and current information about knowledge and practice is identified, selected and summarised in a format suitable for dissemination
3Developments in knowledge and practice as a result of one’s own research are disseminated appropriately to those who are likely to have an interest in them
4Information is provided to individuals and groups in relevant contexts and is presented at a pace, and in a style and form which is appropriate to their needs
5Recipients are given opportunities to ask questions, seek clarification and give feedback
6Appropriate support is offered to colleagues who are undertaking their own research to enable them to do so effectively, given ongoing work constraints
