PURPOSE & ELIGIBLE USES: These grants can be used for any expenses relating to building the capacity of the market such as signage, an information table, a fire extinguisher, or a hand washing station. The grants are intended to assist with the start-up costs of opening a market and to ensure the success of these markets.
REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive this funding, markets must be members in good standing of the NMFMA in their second year of operation, including paying membership dues, submitting themarket’s membership form, and providing theprevious season’s market data.
IN ADDITION: To qualify, markets MUST have a market in one of the following locations: 1) in or adjacent to a “food desert”; 2) in a Far and Remote (FAR) Community; 3) in an area with a higher than average rate of obesity/diabetes. TO FIND OUT IF YOUR MARKET IS LOCATED IN one of these areas go to:

(You can zoom in with the + - bar on the left side.) Then click on the area where your county is. If your area is in a food desert it will say yes. You can also be in a community adjacent to a food desert.
For FAR Community designations go to: http://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/frontier-and-remote-area-codes.aspx#.Ux9hLuddXWo You will then want to download the EXCEL file containing ZIP-code-level FAR codes and related data. You can then find your zip code. If it has a (1) in any of the levels, your market qualifies.
> For obesity/diabetes designations go to: http://diabetes-obesity.findthebest.com/ Type in New Mexico, and find your county. If the obesity rate is higher than 19% (the average rate in New Mexico) your market qualifies.
