Discussion Items

Doyle Scholar Recognition Certificates

In the absence of 2009-10 Doyle Scholarships for high school students, the SRJC Administration and Doyle Trustees approved the distribution of recognition certificates for students who would have been eligible to receive a Doyle Scholarship. High schools provided the Scholarship Office with lists of their graduates with GPA’s of 2.5 or higher. Certificates will be delivered to the high schools next week.

Doyle Replacement Program Campaign

“Bridging the Doyle” will be announced at the end of May at the SRJC President’s Address. This program will provide a mechanism for former Doyle recipients, businesses and community members to contribute to the Doyle fund. The campaign will run through the summer. Donations will be totaled in early fall to determine available funds. If funds reach a sufficient awarding level, an application cycle will be launched once the Fall 2009 semester begins. Spring 2009 high school graduates enrolled full-time at SRJC for Fall 2009 will be targeted for the application process.

Doyle Scholarship and Doyle Occupational Education Award Report

Kris Shear presented her prepared report for the May 2009SRJC Board of Trustees meeting. This report includes the following:

  • 2009-10 Doyle Award Recommendations and Comparison
  • Doyle Fund Financial Forecast and Review

Items of Note:

  • 1,162 students will be offered a 2009-10 Doyle award. Only students receiving Spring 2009 Doyle awards were offered renewal applications. No applications were available

for new applicants.

  • All awards will be at the $1,000 level
  • Total 2009-10 award offer amount – $1,151,000

Foundation Scholarship Data Conversion

The Scholarship Office is beginning to explore the use of the Financial Aid Management (FAM) database program for all scholarship records. This program is used by the Financial Aid Office for all student financial records. Currently Doyle award information is located in FAM but Foundation and Outside Scholarship records are kept in a different program. Converting to FAM would streamline Scholarship records as well as allow Financial Aid staff to access student scholarship information. Such data is critical in determining student financial aid limits.

Osher/Lahm Scholarship

The Osher Foundation has given 50 million dollars to the California Community College System to be matched and distributed by each of the 110 colleges. SRJC is the first community college in California to fulfill its fundraising goal of$887,307. Through the generosity of long-time SRJC donors, Fred and Charles Lahm, SRJC will have a matched contribution equaling $1.77 million. Distribution of Osher/Lahm Scholarships will begin in Fall 2009.
