2016-17 Study Abroad Program in Japan
Tenri University
September 2016 – July 2017
In cooperation with the Center for International Education, the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies at California State University, Long Beach, will offer a yearlong international exchange program at Tenri University (TU) in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture, Japan. TU is close to Kyoto, Osaka and Kansai International Airport. The City of Nara, the capital of Nara Prefecture, was one of the early Imperial capitals of Japan (710 – 784 A.D.). Eight temples, shrines and ruins in Nara, including Todaiji, Saidaiji, Kofukuji, and Kasuga Shrine, are collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nara, Kyoto, and Osaka are ancient cities extremely rich in Japan’s historical, cultural and artistic heritage. The third largest economy in the world, Japan with its unique history and culture will serve as an ideal place for our students to have valuable international educational experience.
In addition to an intensive Japanese language program, CSULB students will take four English-taught content courses (two per semester) on Japan: (1) Japanese History; (2) Japanese Culture and Society; (3) Japanese Religions; and (4) Japanese Anime. Since the Japanese courses are quite rigorous at TU, applicants should have either completed three years of college-level Japanese prior to going to Japan, or acquired equivalent proficiency in Japanese. Students who have native fluency in Japanese may take regular TU courses taught in Japanese.
Because TU has subsidized off-campus apartments (¥20,000 {$268} per month including utilities) for all international students, CSULB students will be able to live and study in Tenri substantially more inexpensively than in other major Japanese cities.
ESTIMATED BUDGET*
The per-student program cost at Tenri University is itemized as follows:
1. Airfare to and from Japan $1,500
2. Apartment 2,600
3. Food and Spending Money 9,000
4. Books and Transportation 2,000
Total Cost $15,100
*The estimated budget does not include CSULB tuition. The total cost of the program may vary depending on airfares, the fluctuating exchange rate, and personal life style.
Completed applications should be submitted to the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies (FO3-340) by March 14, 2016.
