COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Essentials of Healthcare is an immediate course for the Therapeutic Services pathway and is designed to provide an overall framework of basic skills utilized in the provision of direct client care. Monitoring and evaluating client status includes assessment techniques such as vital signs, as well as, the application of mathematical concepts appropriate to clinical expectations and/or work based learning. The function and fundamental pathophysiology of each body system is evaluated prior to community first aid and basic life support techniques which are expanded to include rescue skills for infants and children. The concepts of health, wellness, and preventative care are evaluated, as well as, ethical and legal responsibilities of today’s healthcare provider. Fundamental healthcare skills development is initiated.Opportunities will arise for the student to develop leadership and professional skills that can be applied to post-secondary health career programs.

COURSE UNIT OBJECIVES:

The students will have the opportunity to develop understanding and limited proficiency in the following areas:

  1. Demonstrate effective infection control techniques adhering to OSHA standards.
  2. Recognize the necessity of teamwork and communication within the health care team.
  3. Demonstrate communication skills and professional behavior.
  4. Applies anatomy and physiology-diseases and pathophysiology of various body systems.
  5. Analyze each body system and apply knowledge in performance of evaluating, monitoring. And treatment of patients.
  6. Demonstrate first aid procedures for various emergency situations
  7. Identify/ exploration of career opportunities in health care.
  8. Introduction of life changes, development, and behavior.
  9. Geriatric care
  10. Understanding and application of cultural diversity in the healthcare setting
  11. Current legal and ethical issues/responsibilities of a healthcare provider
  12. Workplace & personal safety
  13. Concepts of microbiology and infection control
  14. Utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations
  15. Leadership opportunities through Health Occupations Students of America – HOSA

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:

A variety of instructional methods will be used, including but not limited to group and individual projects, discussion, demonstration/return demonstration, role-playing, guest speakers, and videos.

EVALUATION METHODS:

ABSENCES/TARDIES:

Attendance in this class is extremely important. It is difficult to perform certain skills without fellow classmates.It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor for any missed class assignments.Makeup work should be done within three days after returning to school, unless prior arrangements have been made.Work cannot be made up for unexcused absences.

HOSA CLUB:

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is a student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA is a co-curricular activity and student organization. Students are expected to be a part of this organization as part of his or her classroom expectations. HOSA meetings, community service projects, blood drives and fundraisers will all be held during class. The students will be able to keep a log of community service hours obtained.

SUPPLIES:

Students are expected to be prepared for class.

  • One 3 Ring Binder
  • 2 packs of page dividers (with at least 16 divider tabs) to help separate weekly work
  • Notebook Paper
  • Black or Blue PensNO PENCILS!
  • 220 Index cards
  • Index card ring or card box to store these
  • Markers/Colored Pencils

CLASS POLICY:

  • Be Prepared (for class having all materials and supplies needed)
  • Be On Time (go to restroom or run errands before class and do not be tardy)
  • Be Attentive (a lot of material will be covered, so take notes and listen)
  • Be Respectful (to classmates, teacher, topics of discussion, and equipment)
  • No food or drinks are to be brought into class, except water in a bottle with a lid
  • Students are to follow my class rules when a sub is present
  • Absolutely no cell phones during class at anytime. All phones will be taken to front office if they are present in class. ______Parent initial ______Student initial

This class will occasionally show medical videos or parts of medicalrelated videos that tend to run PG-13 and occasionally R (Rainman, Girl Interrupted and Outbreak), but may include graphic subject matter (medical-type images, adult language, topics onreproduction, real medical settings/child birth scenes, death/dying concepts). If you wish for your student to not view these materials, please let me know and I will give them an alternate activity/assignment. Students will not be penalized for failure to view the material.

EXPECTATIONS/CONSEQUENCES:

Rules listed above and all Sonoraville and Gordon County Schools policies should be upheld at all times. Not following procedures will lead to discipline consequences outlined by Sonoraville High School.

______I have included my $10 semester lab fee for my student’s in class project/lab participation fee. Without a project/lab fee from students, the labs are limited and activities may be omitted due to the lack of supplies and funds.
