Children Have A Close Shave

Our classroom more resembled a shopping plaza this week. Various stores were set up throughout the classroom. Our Shop & Spend Grocery Store shelved many popular grocery items and a check out counter complete with a scanner and cash register. The “bagger” never failed to inquire whether paper or plastic was preferred. Our Tree Top Cafe also did a booming business as the waiters and waitresses jotted down orders from the customers and then prepared and served the food. The Beauty Shop featured a sale on manicures this week and nearly all of the children have been sporting shiny fingernails. Boys and girls alike enjoyed giving and receiving a shave from our Barber Shop where real shaving cream and tongue depressor razors were used. We also had a Pet Vet on duty to cure the ails of our classroom stuffed menagerie. One of the main objectives of these activities was to enforce coin recognition and value which was the primary focus of this week’s learning centers.

Last week’s centers:

Science: Money Drop The children exercised their fine motor skills at this fun center where they discovered how many drops of water could fit on the head of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter. The answers were surprising! Try this at home!

Math: Piggy Bank Math Given piggy banks, each containing different amounts of coins, the children’s task was to identify the coins and record how many pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters were in each bank. The amounts were recorded on a graph.

Math: Let’s Go Shopping! The children practiced their skills of counting by ones, fives and tens by selecting the proper amount of coins needed to purchase variously priced pictured items.

Math: Kangaroo Race The object of this game was be the first to collect ten kangaroo game pieces by using counting and critical thinking skills.

Math: Two Quarters, Two Dimes and Three Nickels The children rolled a die to earn enough pennies to equal nickels, dimes and quarters

Looking ahead…

SNEAKERS, PLEASE!!

Parents, please have your child wear sneakers to school every day as this is the safest footwear for recess equipment as well as being required for P.E. every day. Changing and tying shoes several times throughout the day is time consuming and a hassle. Children wearing sandals and other types of summery footwear will be required to switch into their tennies upon entering our classroom in the morning.

IT ISN’T OVER ‘TIL the FAT LADY SINGS!! We need everyone to make an extra effort to remember their snack days until the end of the school year. We have had to make a lot of calls home and have been forced to scramble for snacks from our leftovers on many occasions as of late, and our reserve snack supply is all but depleted.
