The National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) finds and interviews 30,000 individuals on at two yearly intervals on behalf of The Presidency. The NIDS team at SALDRU controls this fieldwork, collates and analyses the data. The team consists 12 full staff and up to fifteen part-time staff at any one time. For this exciting project, we require a person to work with the team’s Technical Lead in the continual improvement of our database, call centre and research systems. This is a position under the NIDS internship programme runs until the end of July 2013 with the opportunity of extending the contract subject to securing funding.

Requirements include:

·  B. Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Information Technology/Systems).

·  Experience with database design.

·  Experience with .Net development software, preferably C# and MS SQL.

·  Significant experience in writing SQL queries.

·  Knowledge of MS Access or similar database software.

·  Working knowledge of statistical software, preferably STATA, will be an advantage.

·  An interest in surveys based research and, preferably, some experience in working with household surveys.

Working with the Survey Director and Technical Lead the responsibilities include:

·  Maintaining and improving confidential databases.

·  Writing ad hoc SQL queries and reports to support researchers.

·  Improving a user interfaces for the call center and database users.

·  Maintenance and improvement of the field equipment inventory systems.

·  Ensuring compatibility between databases.

·  Assisting with training users how to use new applications and functions in the software.

·  Assisting with the timely release of new versions of the software to all appropriate workstations.

·  Interacting with third party IT services and equipment suppliers.

·  Assisting in designing the backup systems to ensure the security and integrity of the data.

·  Ensuring regular backups occur.

·  Working with the Technical Lead to ensure a secure and reliable NIDS network.

The 2012 remuneration for this role is R 12,000 per month.
