Course Synopsis
Course objectives / At the heart of this professional course is the belief that learning a language also bestows knowledge of a culture. Thiscourseprovidesstudents with the necessary communication tools to function in an international business environment, an arena that is conducted primarily in English. The course emphasizes and raises students' awareness about conducting business in the global arena – an environment that is both multicultural and cross-cultural.
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
Have the confidence to approach and read a business text (of any length) including business publications and case studies
Master business writing in the form of executive summary, letter, memo and CV
Have a basic professional business English vocabulary that spans accounting, finance, human resources and marketing
Give a professional business presentation (company analysis) using the skills, vocabulary and techniques learned in the course
Course description / The course objective will be carried out using business publications and case studies in different fields of business such as accounting, finance, human resources and marketing. Various skills will be covered in the course which can later be used in the real business world. A group project, consisting of an oral presentation and an executive summary, will be based on the analysis of a company. Research and analytical skills will be covered and implemented in the various course assignments.
The skills taught in this course include:
Business Letter writing
Memo writing
CV (resume) and letter of application writing
Oral presentation skills
Executive summary writing
Method of instruction / Lecture/ note taking
In class exercises (individual and pair work)
Reading business texts and case studies in class
Classroom discussion
Classroom presentations
Evaluation of student progress / *Homework (3) & quizzes (2) average 25%
Oral Presentation 20%
Executive summary 5%
Final Examination 50%
* Three homework assignments will be given (memo, letter and
CV/Cover Letter). Two quizzes will be assigned. In order to calculate
the homework/quiz average, the best 4 out of 5 grades will be
used.In order to be eligible to take the final exam, the student is
required to do an oral presentation and an executive summary.
- In order to pass the course, the student needs a minimum grade of 60 on the final exam and a minimum course grade average of 60.
Description of course requirements / Homework assignments must be submitted on time.
Completing an oral presentation and executive summary is mandatory.
