Class Descriptions

NMT (I, II, or III)

Learn whole body assessment using the MAPP system in order to create an effective treatment plan. The individual intensive modules include body musculature reviews and postural assessment with the application of neurological laws. Specialized focus includes problem oriented techniques for lumbar pain, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff issues, temporomandibular dysfunction, headaches and anxiety among other concerns. This course combines Craniosacral, Myofascial and Trigger point techniques.

Lecture and demonstration of NMT procedures and protocols for the pelvic facilitation technique. Included is postural assessment, explanation of the interrelationship between the three axial planes (cervical/pelvic/tarsal-metatarsal) and demonstration of the pelvic facilitation procedure. Includes cervical/pelvic/sacral decompression and talus bone reset techniques. This is followed by student practice of these procedures.

Student practice and trade-off of postural assessment and pelvic facilitation technique to include cervical/pelvic/sacral decompression and talus bone reset procedures.

Lecture on the O,I,A and release of specific muscles and trigger points involved in pelvic facilitation. Demonstration of NMT/TP muscles release techniques followed by student practice and demonstration of NMT/TP procedures. Muscles included in this segment are latissimus dorsi, erector spinae, quadratus lumborum/ilio lumbar ligament, the lateral raffae, gluteals and deep 6 lateral rotators of the hip with an emphasis on the piriformis and sciatic nerve entrapment/compression. Demonstration of Logan Basic technique and its impact on the above referenced muscles and sacral deviation followed by student practice and demonstration.

Lecture on the O,I,A and release of specific muscles and trigger points involved in pelvic facilitation as related to the thigh, leg and foot. Demonstration of NMT/TP release techniques followed by student practice and demonstration of NMT/TP procedures. Muscles included in this segment are tensor fascia latae, hamstrings, quadriceps, adductors and musculature of the anterior and posterior leg and foot with an emphasis on the impact that the peroneals, tibialis anterior and the gastrocnemius/soleus/achilles complex play on talus bone deviation, inversion and eversion of the foot and the collective impact on posture and the pelvic and cervical axes.

Integrative Neuromuscular Massage

Is a shorten introductory course of the longer NMT I, II, and III. There is a great deal of useful information in this short course, however it is a teaser for the longer program which goes much more in-depth into these powerful techniques.

Ethics for Men

This class is exclusive to men LMT's. Scenarios will be presented to the group for discussion and consensus. Topics discussed will be based upon personal and professional boundaries, legal issues, current experiences, scope of practice, emotional issues, professional responsibility and current practice law. Please see our You Tube Channel for a short video ... https://youtu.be/h1kpW9q8W2M

Cupping

An introduction to uses of cupping and qua sha in massage therapy for musculoskeletal pain. Lecture will include a history of cupping and gua sha, application of these modalities and health conditions which can benefit from these techniques. Participants will use cupping and gua sha techniques in a 60 minute hands on session. Also note that cupping is being used on several of the Olympiads at this years summer Olympics in Rio.

AIS Stretches

The Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) method of muscle lengthening and fascial release is a type of athletic stretching technique that provides effective, dynamic and facilitated stretching of major muscle groups. More importantly using AIS techniques provides function-al and physiological restoration of superficial and deep fascial planes for use in massage therapy.

Aromatherapy

A discussion of basic chemistry, methods of use in the massage therapy scope of practice, safety concerns and contraindications. Marketing language will be evaluated. Select essential oil profiles will include Palo Santo, Jatamansi, Helichrysum and Clary Sage among others. Sampling of essential oils will be provided by the instructor for a comparison study. Participants will use essential oils in a 30 minute hands on session.

Reiki I & II

Reiki is a Japanese technique used for stress reduction, relaxation and healing. Reiki is based on an ancient idea of “laying on of hands” and energy flow through the hands.

LEVEL 1: Participants will learn how to feel the sensation of energy flow through their hands while combining specific Reiki hand positions that help promote relaxation and healing. Participants will learn how to combine Reiki with their current massage methods

and give a Reiki session.

LEVEL 2: (***PREREQUISITE is LEVEL 1): Participants will learn the Ancient Reiki Symbols and their use in a hands-on session. This course will also address long distance healing using this knowledge. Participants will be asked to do a Long Distance Healing session in a Reiki session.

Advanced Myotherapy (no schedule for this class as yet)

“Myofascial Therapy” is a non-invasive hand’s on therapeutic technique. It has been scientifically proven by notable doctors such as Janet Travel and David Simmons. “Myo”, meaning muscle and fascial or fascia is the connective tissue that runs through the inner plains of the body. It can be compared to saran wrap for the body.

The therapist who performs Myo-therapy should be a licensed massage therapist familiar with this technique, Physical Therapist or Occupational Therapist and has a diagnosis from a referring physician. There are doctors of chiropractic and doctors of oriental medicine that also do Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy.

The therapy itself consists of assessing the areas of reported pain and discovering the actual trigger points. These are taunt bands or tender spots that create a referring pain pattern. The therapist applies continuous pressure on the point to the patient’s tolerance and follows up with appropriate stretch techniques. There may also be the use of spray and stretch for creating increased range of motion in an extremity or in the spine. This freezes an area that is having work done to confuse the nervous system to make it easier to get a greater stretch.

The patient is also asked to explain there daily activities so the therapist can modify them in order to create a better awareness for the patient on what can be causing the pain and hopefully alleviate the trigger point which will alleviate the pain Pattern.

Myo-fascial trigger point therapy does not have to be a painful experience. So remember to express your pain tolerance and threshold to your therapist. This class is designed to introduce technique and theory to massage therapist who are interested in advancing and honing their abilities to work with clients that have severe pain issues. We will also discuss how to relate to the medical providers that will be referring patients to you.

Need to Know ...

Note: this is a partial list at this time. We will be adding more later, (such as possibly an Ethics class just for female LMT's) so check either our Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/utmi.massage.school ) or our web site.

In order for your name to be placed on the class roster, you must pay for the class in advance. All others will go on a "standby list" and may be called about 1 week before the class to see if they still want to attend and if there is room to attend.

For these classes, the minimum number of students is four (4) otherwise we will try to reschedule the class. We try to have no more than 20 students in any class. For a canceled class, refunds will be made within 10 days.

We will also be offering some of the same classes (possibly extended to 20 hours) in our Therapeutic Medical Massage program as well. There will be limited seating depending upon the number of current students in that class.

If you have any questions, please call the School at 505-888-0020.
