Course objectives

International management is the process of developing strategies, designing and operating systems, and working with people around the world to ensure sustained competitive advantage.

As the world becomes progressively globalized there is an increasing need to develop specialized international management skills. This course aims at:

Providing knowledge inputs related to the principles and practice of international management;

Inculcating specialized international management skills;

Developing an attitude of understanding and appreciating the impact of a global economy on organizations and the changing functions and responsibilities of international managers; and

Imparting awareness of the Islamic perspectives to the management of international business

The course thus has stringent requirements in terms of application of the knowledge to real-life situations described in case studies. The students are expected to apply themselves to a dedicated understanding of the concepts, theories, and principles of international management and to attempt to relate these to the cases and situations discussed in the classroom.

Teaching methodology

The teaching methodology consists of participative lecturing and case analysis and presentation aimed at the development of the understanding of the concepts, theories, and principles of international management and their application to case analysis. The project paper writing is aimed at the development of analytical skills at understanding of, and writing about, a real-life international organization. Presentation of case and project paper is designed to enhance the verbal skills and to defend one’s reasoning in the classroom.

Evaluation details

The student evaluation will be according to the scheme outlined below.

1.Continuous evaluation: 60 marks

a)Mid-term examination:20 marks

b)Quizzes (two):10 marks

c)Case presentation:10 marks

d)Project paper work:20 marks

(10 marks each for

written and oral presentations)

2.Final examination:40 marks

Mid-term examination The examination will be held as per the course schedule mentioned above. It will consist of multiple-choice questions, and short-answer questions.

Quizzes Two quizzes, each of 5 marks, will be given containing multiple-choice questions. The dates of quizzes are mentioned in the course schedule.

Case presentation Students will form themselves in groups of five to six students in the first session and report to me. The groups will be allocated cases from the textbook. Each group will make an analysis and make the oral presentation in the class as per a schedule to be announced separately. No written case analysis is required. The evaluation will be individual for each member of the group based on his/her originality of ideas, demonstration of effective communication skills, and satisfactory answering of questions posed in the class.

Written project paper Each group (the same as for case presentation) would prepare a project paper on an international organization or MNC (a foreign company operating in Malaysia) operating in the KlangValley. Examples of such organizations are Coca Cola, Microsoft, Toyota, Unilever, UNICEF, etc. You can choose international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) too. Companies such as Tenaga Nasional, Petronas, Telekom etc. - that are Malaysian companies also operating abroad - are not to be chosen. Please consult me before you finalize the name of the company you plan to write about so that there is no confusion and two or more groups do not choose the same company for presentation.

The written project paper will be in two parts: Part A and Part B. Part A would present the corporate profile of the company while Part B would present the project undertaken by the group. Part A should be about one-third of your report (5-7 pages) and Part B should be two-thirds (10-14 pages)

It is suggested that the corporate profile could cover most or all of the following areas in Part A of the report:

Company background, and growth, and its top management structure and organization chart

Markets catered to and the products / services offered, and technologies utilized

In Part B of the report, the group may write based on the conduct of personal interviews and/or a small questionnaire survey on any one of the following topics. The group may also choose some other topic but with my prior concurrence.

Cultural profile of the company / Corporate culture at the company

Cross-cultural communication at the company

Decision-making styles at the company

Process of negotiations adopted at the company

Strategies adopted by the company at the corporate and business levels

Organization structure and control systems at the company

How does the company performs its staffing and training operations

Expatriate compensation system at the company

How is motivation and leading done at the company

Please note that the above list of content is only suggestive. You may alter the contents to suit the requirements of the project paper you are writing. You are most welcome to contact me as soon as you finalize the outline of your project paper.

The information for writing the project paper should be obtained directly from sources such as interviews, visits, and company documents. The Internet resources could also be accessed. But you must make sure that you give the source of information that you use at the end of the project paper.

The length of the project paper should be between 15 to 20 A-4 size pages typed in Times Roman 12 sized font and with 1 ½ spacing with adequate margins on the left and right sides. The cover page should only contain the following information:

Title of the project paper (Name of the company, its location, etc.)

Name of the students in the group with their Matric Number, Program, and Level

Date of submission

The last page of the project paper should contain a bibliography listing the sources used for writing.

The written project paper will be evaluated on a group basis depending on the quality of writing, neatness, arrangement of material, seriousness exhibited, and the extent to which the group has followed the requirements for report writing.

Oral presentation of project paper The project paper will be presented before the class as per the schedule announced separately. The evaluation will be individual for each member of the group based on his/her originality of ideas, demonstration of effective communication skills, and satisfactory answering of questions posed in the class.

Submission deadline: Each group will submit the written paper immediately after its presentation in the classroom.

Final examination The final examination will be held as per schedule announced separately. It will consist of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and a compulsory case analysis. Students are expected to demonstrate and apply the Islamic perspectives while answering the short-answer questions.

It is the responsibility of the students to appear in the tests, examinations, and quizzes and adhere to the submission deadlines. There would be no make-up quizzes or mid-term test without a valid reason supported by documentary proof. Late submission of written project paper, tolerated for a limited duration, shall be penalized by awarding lesser grades / marks.
