Class Description:Integrated Science 1 will teach students how to explore the natural world by understanding how energy drives forces in our planet, observing weather and climate and the effects it has on living things, and understanding the upward organization of living things. Students will be able to use their engineering skills throughout the class.

Expectations:

Students will be expected to be active participants in their learning. This means that they take responsibility for their work, that they come to class prepared and always give their best effort. In science we want students to learn and practice the skills necessary to be problem solvers in our modern world. We will analyze, test and interpret real world issues and apply solutions to these problems. Students are expected to be in class everyday because all projects, labs and collaborative work will be completed and missing one day will set a student far behind. We will work together to achieve high standards and work together to be successful.

Earphones (used for independent practice everyday)

Grading Plan:

-Grades are based on the Rubric system. Each assignment is assigned a rubric score of 0 - 4.

-Each student is required to create and maintain a scientific notebook (composition book). This notebook will be checked and graded at every test period.

Homework: Assigned frequently, but not daily.

Any work not completed during the daily lesson willbecome homework.

Course Policies: All class materials will be found on my website students will create their log-ins on the first weeks of school. Students should be using this website at home to study and for extra practice.

Student Work: Students will be expected to complete assignments outside of class time on a regular basis. All students are expected to read class material, think critically and write effectively.All year we will work together to reach high standards in reading and writing through scientific inquiry.

Group Activities: You will be working in groups on a regular basis. At Skirball we focus on using written and spoken English language and we will practice this through collaboration with our classmates. You will be asked to participate in groups although everyone will turn in and be assessed from their own individual work.

Absences: If a student is absent, it is THEIR responsibility to get all late work from the teacher and return it in a timely manner. Students must make an appointment to review work and make up assignments.

Bathroom: Students will receive bathroom passes to save and use when necessary.

Behavior

If you choose to break a rule…

  • First time= Verbal Warning
  • Second time= Scholar Dollars taken away (Possible seat change)
  • Third time= Reflection after class, call home, and detention. Possibly sent out of class

*Severe infractions (fighting, cheating, blatant disrespect, etc.) may result in an automatic referral.

REWARDS:

  • Students who exhibit appropriate behavior and meet classroom expectations will be rewarded in a variety of ways. Such rewards include verbal praise, positive phone calls, Scholar Dollars, and positive letters and phone call home.

Note: The instructor retains the right to make changes, additions, and deletions to this syllabus during the course of the year.

Statement for Academic Dishonesty:Academic honesty is expected in this class. Cheating will not be tolerated. Consequences may include: reduction in grade on assignment, repeat assignment, no grade on assignment or others as deemed appropriate. Academic dishonesty will be reported to a school counselor and a parent will be notified.
