TITLE:MECHANIC / ACTIVE TRAVEL TRAINER
SALARY:£16,882 to £17,820 depending on experience and qualifications
GRADE:5 / 6 depending on experience and qualifications
HOURS:37 hours per week
Work outside normal office hours / days will be required for which time off in lieu will be granted
RESPONSIBLE TO:Active Travel Coordinator
LOCATION:Middlesbrough Environment City, Sandy Flatts Lane, Acklam, Middlesbrough, TS5 7YN
JOB PURPOSE:To provide and support active travel training within the areas of active travel undertaken by Middlesbrough Environment City, including Bikeability, cycle maintenance, pedestrian training and health walks, in line with the post holders skills and experience.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To prepare, deliver and assess a programme of active travel training in schools, communities and workplaces, dependent upon skills and experience, and inclusive ofBikeability, pedestrian training, healthy walks, and similar activities.
- To deliver cycle maintenance training to Velotec standard or equivalent.
- Deliver outreach training programmes to specific venues as identified by the Active Travel Coordinator.
- To provide cover for the Middlesbrough Cycle Centre, covering for other staff as required, and providing a minor repairs service for Cycle Centre users.
- To complete the necessary paperwork for the successful completion and monitoring of MEC’s active travel programmes.
- To provide additional support to, and substitution for, other active travel staff as necessary to ensure the successful delivery of MEC’s active travel programmes.
- To undertake additional training as required.
- Assist at Health related events and activities.

IN ADDITION TO THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To assist with other aspects of MEC’s work as appropriate and such other duties in keeping with the general aims of the post as may from time to time be determined by the Director.
- To ensure that the requirements of the company’s Health and Safety policies and procedures are practised and observed.
- To ensure that the requirements of the Company’s Equal Opportunities and Environment policies and procedures are practised and observed.
- Contribute to Middlesbrough’s Public Health agenda, through developing a basic understanding of Public Health issues and signposting to local health improvement services. Appropriate training will be provided.
- To attend training as required to maximise performance with the organisation.
- To work with all MEC staff to maximise the achievement of outcomes across the organisation through a joined up approach to working.
- As this post involves work with children and vulnerable groups, any appointment will be subject to a Disclosure under the Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Service.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
MECHANIC / ACTIVE TRAVEL TRAINER

Essential / DesirableKeen, competent and experienced cyclist in all traffic conditions, with a real enthusiasm for cycling. / X
Competent walker with an enthusiasm for others to enjoy the benefits of walking. / X
An interest in cycle maintenance. / X
A qualification in cycle training. / X
A qualification in cycle maintenance. / X
Previous experience of delivering active travel programmes, including cycling, pedestrian training and/or walking for health / X
Customer service experience / X
National accreditation, where appropriate, in the relevant active travel disciplines. / X
Knowledge and experience of organising and delivering community events / X
Experience of promotion, publicity activities, or organising community events, ideally in a sustainable transport context / X
Understanding of the need for and of undertaking appropriate monitoring of projects / X
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work successfully as part of a team. / X
Working knowledge of IT packages including Microsoft Word and Excel / X
