GHLS UPDATE

SCHOOL PICTURE RETAKES ARE NOVEMBER 8 Tomorrow is the date for school picture retakes. Plan accordingly, if you are going to have your picture retaken for 2012-13.
HONOR ROLL CHANGE For 2012-13, K3-Grade 2 redid their report cards to make discussing student progress with parents more meaningful. In that process, traditional A-F letter grades were replaced with progress indicators (see table below). As a result, GHLS’s students in Grades 1-2 are no longer eligible for the current Honor Roll which utilizes traditional grade point average (GPA). The K3-Grade 2 staff, and the GHLS administration, will work on developing a new way to recognize the academic achievements of our K3-Grade 2 students.

FIRST QUARTER ENDS The first quarter of the 2012-13 school year ended on October 24 after 44 days of school. Required report card conferences were held last week, and 91% of our school parents were able to attend these. The 9% who were not able to make the conferences, have until Friday, November 16 to complete them. Children whose parents do not complete the conference by that date will be excluded from classes until the obligation is met. Missed days are counted against the 16 days of absence allowed for the year.
SPOONMAN’S MESSAGE WAS PERFECT In a very upbeat and entertaining performance on October 29, the Spoonman, Jim Cruise, played spoons to various types of music and encouraged students to work hard in school, develop their reading skills to the max, and rely on the Lord to help them at all times. For a couple songs, the Spoonman brought GHLS students up to join in the fun. Above-right, Mr. Walz (Gr. 7), Cameren Hardin (Gr. 8) and Dabrianna Neal-Brown (Gr. 3) help the Spoonman (Hawaiian shirt) make a Hillbilly Band. He got all of them to play spoons and dance as any good Hillbilly Band would.

PENNY WAR COMPETITION BEGINS From Monday, November 5, 2012, through Friday, March 15, 2013, the G-House of Representatives is sponsoring a “Penny War” between classes to raise funds for a school trophy case. $1,000 is the goal with the winning class getting $100 to spend as it sees fit, as well as, ice cream for a whole week. So save your loose change and bring it to your classroom.
WHAT MAKES TEENS TICK? The term “adolescence” describes the teenage years between 13 and 19 and can be considered the transitional stage from childhood to adulthood. However, the physical, psychological, and spiritual changes that occur in adoles-cence can start earlier, duringthe preteen or "tween" years—ages 9-12. “What Makes Teens Tick” (presented by Dr. Nelson in the GHLS Music Room) will look at what’s going on in your child physiologically, psychologically, and spiritually. It will reveal the three big questions all teens want answered. It will explore your child’s journey to independence and how that journey involves tremendous peer pressure and strong urges to break free. It will leave you with three simple parenting rules that can make a huge difference in your relation-ship with your pre-teen and teen children. It will give you new tools and confidences to get through what really is a very dynamic, sometimes troubling, and truly exciting time for your family. So come, learn, and grow. You and your teens and tweens will be better for it. Wednesday, November 14, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Same thing repeated on Saturday, November 17, 9:00-10:30 a.m. GHLS Music Room 111.
FREE MOVIE NIGHT A free movie night, sponsored by Garden Homes Lutheran Church, will feature the acclaimed movie “Of Boys and Men”, starring award-winning actors Robert Townsend, Angela Bassett, and Victoria Rowell. This moving drama highlights the strength of family and the power of God to help in overcoming an unexpected tragedy. The 86-minute movie received a PG-13 rating for thematic material and brief scenes depicting drug use. We hope you can join us for a free night out. Popcorn, pizza, and beverages will be provided. Come to Room 111, select a seat, and enjoy the show in stereo surround sound.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARDED At the Fall Recognition Event (Nov. 7) 71, K3-Grade 8 students (28% of the total GHLS enrollment) were given awards for not missing any days of school or ever being tardy for the 1st Quarter of the 2012-13 school year. That’s wonderful! GHLS average, daily attendance for all students is about 96%, but having this many students never miss a day, is truly special.
