Learning Notebook: Entry #1

Personal Learning Profile Reflection

Overview: Create an entry for your learning notebook that allows you to reflect on yourself as a person and a learner. Considering the three learning profiles and goals/dreams brainstorming you’ve completed thus far, prepare a multi-page reflection that allows you to process the information you’ve discovered about yourself.

Entry Structure:

I. ENTRY COVER PAGE

II. SECTION ONE: LEARNING PROFILES

A.  Section Title Page

B.  Metaphor / Adjectives Page (1 page)

Draw an image or use clip art or other visuals to identify that metaphor. If you desire, add other images that reflect your specific interests/qualities. (Note: Create a metaphor for yourself that helps us understand you as a learner and a person: To what in the known world might you compare yourself? You might choose an animal or plant, a geological structure or phenomenon, a vehicle or other object of transportation, or something else entirely.)

Then, choose three adjectives that best describe yourself based on the learning profiles we’ve completed in class. Place those adjectives on the page. Use words cut out of magazines, draw, or incorporate word art designed on the computer. (Note: Look carefully at the statements you found true or agreed with about yourself in the informal surveys as well as the scores for each survey. Think about what this information tells you about yourself.)

C.  Learning Profile Reflection (1-2 pages, double-spaced)

Prepare a written reflection that addresses what you have learned about yourself from completing the learning profiles and preparing this learning notebook entry. You should consider these questions as you respond:

Learning Profiles

What are your intellectual strengths? What sort of activities do you do well? What do you

enjoy learning? In what areas do you need to improve and practice more? How do you prefer to

process new information? Are you a kinesthetic, visual, or auditory learner? How might you make

this learning style work for you? What activities might you try in your studies? What is your

personality? How do you interact with others? What is your approach to circumstances in your day-

to-day life? How do you respond to conflict? How might you adjust your behaviors when dealing

with others or frustrations? What other perspectives might you consider or adopt?

Metaphor

What metaphor did you choose to understand yourself? Why did you choose that metaphor? Explain how that metaphor reflects what you learned in the profiles.

Adjectives

Why are these adjectives essential to describing yourself? What have you learned about your intelligence, sensory preferences, and your personality (considering your approach to life and your interaction with others)?

III. SECTION TWO: LIFE GOALS AND DREAMS

A.  Section Title Page

B.  My Life Goal Chart – What do you envision having accomplished in six months, one year, five years, ten years, twenty-five years, and fifty years? (1 page)

C.  The Obscure Destiny Assignment – Include the handout you completed as well as your shape attached to a colored sheet of paper. (2 pages)

D.  The Dream Quest Assignment – Include the cover sheet and your list of 50 dreams or accomplishments you desire to accomplish in your life. (2-3 pages)

E.  Goals and Dreams Reflection (1 – 2 pages, double-spaced)

Prepare a written reflection in which you elaborate on some of the ideas, goals, and dreams you’ve considered in the previous assignments. You should consider these questions as you respond:

Goals

What actions, beliefs, and attitudes will you need in order to stay focused on your “obscure destiny” and to overcome any obstacles that may keep your “obscure destiny” from coming true? How might you apply a “slight edge” mentality to your own life?

Dreams

Why are the dreams you identified important to you? What do they reveal about you at this point in your life?
