4-H Photography Contest Rules for 2008

Rules:

*This contest is open to all 4-H members enrolled in the third grade through 18 years of age, as of August 31, 2008

*Photographs must have been taken by the 4-H members since December 1, 2007

*Entries must be in the form of prints or enlargements – color, or black and white – and mounted on a stiff board the same size as the photograph.

*A 4-H’er may have one entry per class in each category for a total of 17 entries.

*Entries must arrive in the County Office by no later than November 21, 2008.

*Only one print of a photo is eligible for competition in either color or black and white.

Categories:

SINGLE BLACK AND WHITE PRINT – The exhibit will consist of one mounted 5” x7” black and white print OR one mounted 8” x10” black and white print. The print must be mounted on a stiff board the same size as the print. The photo may be cropped for effect, but the resulting photograph must measure either 5”x7” or 8”x 10”.

SINGLE COLOR PRINT – The exhibit will consist of one mounted 5”x7” color OR one mounted 8”x10” color print. The print must be mounted on a stiff board the same size as the print. The photo may be cropped for effect, but the resulting photograph must measure either 5”x7” or 8”x 10”.

Divisions Classes Division Description

People (1)Color People (babies, children, adults, and senior

(2) B&W Citizens) alone or in a group active or

Inactive. Such photos may be photojournalistic, or an interpretative portrait where the person rather than the enrivonment is emphasized.

Animals (1)Color Animal life, including domestic, wild,

(2) B&W insects, and underwater creatures. The

animal(s) should be the focus of the photo and not human subjects or nature/scenic. No harm or injury should be inflicted on the animal in order to acquire the photo.

Still Life (1) Color Photography where objects are

(2) B&W pre-arranged or set up by the

photographer(composition does not occur

naturally).

Natural Landscape (1) Color Scenes of natural landscaped, seascapes,

(2) B&W skyscapes (sunsets, clouds, etc.) or underwater scenes.

Plant/Flora (1) Color Any photograph that focuses on the plant or

(2)B&W or flower structure and not on a scene or landscape.

Architectural (1) Color Photos that emphasize geometric details

(2) B&W such as lines, patterns, textures or inaminate

objects.

Special Effects/Creative (1) Color Any photo that has been enhanced to bring

Effects Theme (2) B&W out dramatic or artistic qualities, these

Enhancements can occur using the camera or developing process. Antiquing, hand-tinting, and sepia-tone photos would be entered in this division. Please attach a copy of the original, un-edited photo (any size) to the back of this entry.

“Volunteers in Action” (1) Color The 2008-2009 Theme will be “Volunteers

Technical Challenge (2)B&W in Action”. Volunteers, youth and adults,

play an important role in our society. 4-H

members are encouraged to take

photographs of volunteers in organizations

such as Habitat for Humanity, etc.

Night Life (1) Color This category will have a different focus

(2) B&W each year to help challenge the technical skills of photography. This year, the challenge theme will be NIGHT LIFE. The photo should be taken at night in the outdoors of any person, place, or thing. The emphasis should be placed on the quality of the exposure.
