Model identifying nouns in sentences and categorizing them using first sentences of exercise. / Discussion and modeling on how noun choice affects understanding and interpretation of text. Ex: substituting a more specific or descriptive noun to increase clarity or a more general noun to speak on a more universal or deliberately vague level. / .
“We Do” / Practice noun category exercise with partners on next few sentences. / With students, alter sample sentences to change noun category (sing to pl, con to abs, etc.) to alter content, meaning or interpretation. Remind students of article and verb agreements when switching between sing. & pl.
Release students who are ready to rewrite paragraph, substituting / Discuss and consider verb choices versus adjective and adverb use in comics. Discuss and consider how verb language and images affect theme and impact of narrative.
