INFORMATION FOR RECOGNITION OF CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT

Be aware that the documents requested for the recognition of citizenship do not expire.

Applicants over 18 of age born in the UK to Italian nationals registered with the AIRE office and with an Italian passport issued before 05.02.1992, whose birth certificate has never been registered in Italy, need to produce the following:

·  application form (see annex 1);

·  full birth certificate apostilled by the “The Legalisation Office” Norfolk House (West) 437 Silbury Boulevard Milton Keynes MK9 2AH Tel. 037 00 00 22 44 Fax: 01908295122 e-mail: web-site: www.fco.gov.uk/legalisation and translated into Italian. The translation will be certified by the citizenship office. Have with you some cash for the payment.

·  a declaration (see annex 2), for the period 1844/Sept. 1986, from The National Archives, Kew Richmond Surrey TW9 4DU (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk) or, for the period after 1 October 1986, from Home Office UK Border Agency Reliance House 20 Water Street, Liverpool, L2 8XU () that their father/mother, who was born in Italy, either never naturalised in this Country, or with the date of the father/mother’s naturalisation. These declarations must be apostilled by the “The Legalisation Office” Norfolk House……. Milton Keynes …..(as above) and translated into Italian. The translation will be certified by the citizenship office. Have with you some cash for the payments.

If you are a descendant of an Italian citizen, you need to produce the original birth, marriage and death certificates for the LAST person in your family born in Italy (N.B. this person’s birth certificate MUST be issued by the Comune of origin in Italy and is called “estratto per riassunto dell’atto di nascita” and for ALL the members of your family, including yourself, who are descended from that person.

Each of the above certificates (except for the “estratto” issued in Italy) MUST be legalised by Apostille, if the Country signed the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961. In case the Country has not the legalisation by Apostille, the documents must be legalised by the Italian Consulate/Embassy in the country of issue and be translated into Italian. The translations must be certified by the Italian Consulate/Embassy in the Country of issue of the documents. Both the legalisation and the certified translations must be done before being presented at this Consulate General. (for the list of Italian Consulates/Embassies visit: www.esteri.it).

You must obtain a declaration from the local authorities in the Country of residence of the LAST person born in Italy that he/she never naturalised in that Country, or with the date of naturalization. The translation of British documents will be certified by this citizenship office. Have with you some cash for paying the certification of translations.

IF ANY OF THE ABOVE RENOUNCED ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP BEFORE THE BIRTH OF THE NEXT DESCENDANT, YOU DO NOT QUALIFY FOR ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP

ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP CAN ONLY BE PASSED ON THROUGH THE MOTHER WHEN THE BIRTH OF HER CHILD OCCURRED AFTER JANUARY 1° 1948.

Please note:

·  the applicant is required to come to the Consulate in person with his/her passport and:
a photocopy of UK residence permit issued by Home Office or working visa issued by the British Embassy/Consulates. Please note that if you have a tourist visa or a student visa, you cannot apply for the Italian citizenship at this Consulate. You must have at least 2 years British residence permit or 2 years working visa.

·  photocopy of the applicant’s passport (the pages showing the photograph, signature and U.K. residence permit or working visa);

·  one proof of residence (like utility bill, council tax book, bank statement).

Each original must be produced with 1 photocopy.

First book an appointment and then collect the documents.
The ONLY way you can book an appointment with the citizenship office is by Internet through our website: www.conslondra.esteri.it On the home page click on the bar where is written in red “Automated appointment…”. Create your own account and then you’ll be able to book it for marriage or for descent. Be aware that you can only book from today until the next 24 weeks except Wednedays. In case you do not find any available appointment you have to try every day until you find a place. We DO NOT HAVE access to the automated appointment system. So please do not ask for an appointment by email or by phone.
