BOARD SUMMARY

A meeting of the Board of Education was called to order in the Auditorium at the Marion Elementary School at 7:00 P.M.

Board members present were: Mr. Adriaansen, Mrs. Keys, Mr. Porter, Mrs. Tennity, and Mrs. Varalli

Administrators present were: Mr. Casper, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Murdock, Mr. Perry, Mr. Reimer, and Mrs. Wegman

Student Reps. present were: K. Cummings, A. Varalli

Mrs. Varalli called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kristen Cummings, Editor of the 2008-2009 Yearbook presented the Board of Education and Superintendent with copies of the Yearbook titled “Knights Worth Remembering.”

A recognition ceremony was held beginning with the awarding of outside and underclassmen awards. Mr. Perry and Mr. Casper presented several Seniors and Juniors with awards and scholarships. Over $707,000 was awarded. Special presentations were made by Wegman’s and the Army ROTC. Next Mrs. Varalli recognized Kristen Cumming and Andrew Varalli for their service as Student Board Representatives. Mrs. Varalli stated that she was proud of the students and thankful for their input to the Board. Mrs. Varalli and Mrs. Wegman recognized Mr. Larry Porter for his 3 year term as a school Board member. Mrs. Varalli and the administrators recognized this year’s retirees and they were presented with a resolution honoring their dedicated service to the district. This year’s retirees are: Carol Canne, Teacher Assistant; Paul Erway, Bus Mechanic (Dec. ’08); Helen Gigliotti, Instrumental Music; Rich Gigliotti, Instrumental Music; Mary Miller, Director of Transportation; Addie Roberts, Bus Driver; Terri Roberts, Bus Driver (Dec. ’08); and Mary VanderMeere, Bus Driver.

The student board representatives reported on end of the year activities including music and sports awards, VoPro and New Visions graduation; Stars of Tomorrow and the Sherburne-Earlville Band Pageant. They stated that 8th Grade Recognition would be held on 6/16 followed by a dance. The students also reported that the senior class had planted a tree at the Jr.-Sr. High School in memory of classmate Jeff Welch.

To begin the community forum Mrs. Varalli read a statement regarding Mr. Troy Nolte in response to the

many questions received by the Board about this topic. An opportunity for community questions and comments

was given. A community member made comments pertaining to the bands performance at the Sherburne-

Earlville Pageant of Bands and asked the Board not to consider using this event as a budget cut in the future.

Board members attended several events including the music awards and marching band events. Mr. Porter

stated that four of the Board members have students involved in band and chorus and all board members are

dedicated to the music program. The administrators strongly support this program as well. The Board needs

input from the community and has a responsibility to all tax payers. A thank you was heard from Mr. Merkey,

substitute Band director, for all the support he has received. Mrs. Hoad also thanked the Marching Band for

it’s participation in the recent American Legion parade.

Mrs. Wegman reported that the CSEA Contract had been ratified that afternoon. She gave a comparison of

math scores with Wayne-Finger Lakes schools to the Board. Mrs. Wegman stated that the following positions

would be restored to full-time status for the 2009/2010 school year using the Federal Stimulus money:

TOSA position (which means a LTS Elementary Classroom teacher will be restored), .5 Special Education

Teacher, .5 Math Teacher, .4 Enrichment Math Coach, .2 School Psychologist. Mrs. Wegman also stated that in

accordance with Board Policy included in the Board packet was food expenditures for the second semester.

Mr. Reimer reviewed the Financial Report, Appropriation Status Report, FICA-Medicare Expenses and Medical and Dental Insurance Expenses. He stated that expenses are a little lower than anticipated and the district will use the savings to do preventative maintenance and pre-purchasing for next school year. Also, some savings would be placed into the Unemployment Reserve. Mr. Reimer stated that FICA-Medicare costs were 2.26% below last year and Medical & Dental Insurance Expenses were 5.41% higher than last year. Mr. Reimer presented the Board an Insurance quote from Ashley Insurance.

Mrs. Murdock reported that the Elementary Student Council held a social with admission being a canned food item. They collected over 200 pounds of food for the food pantry. Six elementary and four high school students participated in the New York State Art teachers’ portfolio project. The students portfolios were adjudicated last week and everyone earned a Distinguished award. The K-4 vocal concert organized by Mrs. Stock was once again a huge success.

Mr. Casper stated that the 6th graders would be going to Camp Stella Maris on Wednesday and would return on Friday. Graduation for 6th grade will be Monday, June 22nd. Field days for 5th and 6th grade will be held June 23rd. The 7th grade held an end of the year kick ball tournament that was fun for all and as stated by the student representatives, 8th grade recognition will be held on June 16th.

Mr. Perry announced that during the Red Cross Blood Drive held on May 5th 61 students gave blood helping 183 different patients. The blood drive is organized by students in Participation in Government class and held twice a year. Mr. Perry stated that Regents testing would begin on June 16th.

The meeting was adjourned to executive session at 8:25 PM. The executive session was adjourned at 9:15 PM.
