A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO DECLARE APRIL 1824, 2010, AS “SOUTH CAROLINA GOLF WEEK.”

Whereas, the golf industry is represented in every county of South Carolina through the state’s more than 400 golf courses; and

Whereas, a 2009 economic impact study of golf found that, in 2007, the golf economy in South Carolina generated a total economic impact (direct, indirect, and induced) of approximately $2.721 billion in output or sales; and

Whereas, in 2007 the South Carolina golf industry provided jobs for 33,535 South Carolinians and generated total wage income of $834 million; and

Whereas, golf courses provide a habitat for a broad range of wildlife, often in heavily urbanized areas; and

Whereas, golf courses and golfing provide a focus for healthful social and family activity; and

Whereas, golf delivers these benefits in a way that is among the cleanest, greenest, and most sustainable industries in the State; and

Whereas, the Myrtle Beach Area is universally recognized as The Golf Capital of the World, and the Kiawah Island Resort has hosted the Ryder Cup, Senior PGA Championship and will host the 2012 PGA Championship; and

Whereas, Hilton Head Island, Daniel Island, and Upstate South Carolina will host PGA Tour and PGA Nationwide Tour events this year; and

Whereas, all of these events provide significant charitable contributions, increased economic activity, and will enhance South Carolina’s prestige on the national and international sports stage; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina is home to Lucas Glover, the 2009 U.S. Open Champion; and

Whereas, golf is economically vital, environmentally responsible, and socially beneficial to the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, declare April 1824, 2010, as “South Carolina Golf Week.”

Be it further resolved hat a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Happ Lathrop, Executive Director of the South Carolina Golf Association, and the South Carolina Junior Golf Association.
