SUMMARY:

Number of schools – 6 which includes the Los Robles after school program

Total number of students and teachers – 642 in outlying villages

20-25 from Los Robles school which increased throughout the week.

55 pairs of shoes were distributed at Los Robles with 2 pair going to a special needs student at the school in Godinez. Approximately 150 pairs of shoes were donated to the village of San Lucas distributed and photo documented by Anselmo, Casa de Sion employee.

School supplies were donated to all the schools visited by the team.

HIGHLIGHTS BY DAY:

Saturday – Safe arrival at Guatemala City Airport, no lost or delayed participants or luggage. 3 hour drive to Los Robles and Casa de Sion. Settled into third floor of guesthouse.

Sunday – Trip to San Andres for Sunday street market, optional church services. All donations sorted. Interpretation class presented.

Monday – attended opening assembly at Chuti Estancia school included flag presentation, national anthem, flag pledge and words from adults. Many in this community speak Quiche as their first language and some speak Ketchaquel. Taught in the morning. Classes included Origami, Easter egg hunt, Gymnastics. Casa de Sion children were taught Handwashing, Nutrition/Sleep, and Health Trivia and game in the afternoon.

Katie, Tyler (interpreter), Los Robles student Samuel and his mother went to Solola to dentist Dr. Edgar Juarez where his mouth was examined, filling completed and appointments set up for the future. This was paid for by Humanitize Expeditions. This is the child whose teacher brought him to the clinic in June because his tooth pain was so severe he could not function in class. A “dentist” in San Andres had pulled two teeth and this was the follow up. The mother was given money to take him two more times in August and October to complete the work needed.

Tuesday – Morning teaching at Panimazalam. Classes included dental hygiene, airplanes and purses, bowling. The children at Casa de Sion did yarn dolls, Tic tac toe game and butterfly craft in the afternoon.

Wednesday – Morning teaching at Maria del Carmen. Classes included knot tying, triangle game, body tracing. The children at Casa de Sion did Origami, crafts, and soccer/beach balls.

Thursday – Morning teaching at Tocache. Classes included Handwashing, Nutrition/Sleep, crafts. The children at Casa de Sion did know tying, triangle game and checkers.

Friday – Morning teaching at Godinez. Classes included body tracing, tic-tac-toe game, knot tying. The children at Casa de Sion did gymnastics, paper airplanes and bowling.

Saturday – a fun day crossing Lake Atitlan and visiting the old village of Santiago, seeing the historic Catholic Church, shopping in the markets and shops then back to Panajachel to shop and walk and eat.

Sunday – Early pick-up and return to Guatemala City for flight home.
