Summer Political Studies in Dublin, Ireland

16 June – 25 July 2008

Discover the history, politics, and culture of the Emerald Isle while earning 6 UF credit hours this summer! The Department of Political Science and the University of Florida International Center (UFIC) are pleased to offer students an extraordinary opportunity to study abroad in Dublin, Ireland for 6-weeks in Summer 2008.

All majors are welcome in the program. Students can choose any 2 of the following 3 courses for study, all of which for 3 UF credit hours each (i.e., not transfer credit):

Irish Government and Politics

Irish Political Thought & Literature

(Professor Dan O’Neill)

Ireland and the European Union

(Professor Leann Brown)

The courses will be taught at Dublin City University (DCU) just north of the lively city centre, accessible by bus (10 minutes) or by the DART train (2 stops) to the O’Connell Street area. Students will have access to library facilities, Internet, and exercise facilities at DCU.

Students will also be housed (two persons per room) at DCU in the undergraduate dormitories, which include ensuite bathrooms, television, telephone, hair dryers, and a common kitchen and living area that have a microwave oven, refrigerator, and tea/coffee and cooking facilities. Program fees INCLUDE housing costs for 6 weeks.

The Summer Political Studies in Ireland program features a variety of general excursions in Dublin and day/weekend excursions around Ireland and to Belgium/Luxembourg for all program participants. Each course also comprises additional day tours. All excursions below are INCLUDED in the program fees.

All students will visit the following sites:

* Guided, introductory tour of Dublin

* Dublin Writer’s Museum and James Joyce Museum

* Kilmainham Gaol and Museum, Dublin, site of the

executions of the Patriots of the 1916 Easter Rising and

frequent backdrop for Irish movies (e.g., Michael

Collins)

* The Office of the Taoiseach, the Irish Prime Minister

* Dáil Éireann (Leinster House, the Irish Parliament)

* Abbey Theatre & Play (Dublin)

* Dublin Castle

* Book of Kells/Trinity College (Dublin)

* St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Dublin)

* Meet with Members of the European Parliament

(MEPs) representing Dublin

* Attend a hurling match of the Gaelic Athletic

Association at Croke Park, Europe’s largest stadium

& site of the First Bloody Sunday, 1920 (Dublin)

* Blarney Castle/Blarney Stone (County Cork)

* Weekend visit to Galway, centre of Gaelic culture in

Western Ireland, and day trip to the Árann Islands

(County Galway)

* 2-3 day visit to Belfast & Northern Ireland, tour of

Belfast’s political murals, Protestant & Catholic areas of

town, Belfast City Hall, meetings with political

representatives and former political prisoners from

both sides of the Northern Ireland conflict (i.e.,

Loyalists, Sinn Féin)
