JOB TITLE / Salaried General PractitionerREPORTS TO / GP Partners/ Practice Manager
JOB PURPOSE / Work effectively as part of the Practice team, thus ensuring the professional, effective and efficient operation of the Practice.
Provide general medical services, dealing with the health needs of a range of patients, while ensuring the highest standards of professional care.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1 / Work is determined by the needs of the Practice and its patients; the postholder is expected to work autonomously within agreed parameters and established procedures
2 / Undertake a wide range of clinical duties and responsibilities normally associated with a GP working in a Primary Care environment including, but not restricted to, the following:
- make professional, autonomous, clinical decisions as appropriate
- provide surgery consultations and on-call cover as part of the agreed GP rota
- carry out telephone consultations and house visits as required
- prescribe according to locally or nationally agreed guidelines
- check and sign repeat prescription requests
- complete medical reports, referral letters and other, patient-related correspondence in a professional and timely manner
- record clear and effective computer-based consultation notes to agreed standards
- participate in Practice meetings, PLT events and Significant Event Analysis reviews as required
- supervise medical students as required
3 / Maintain quality standards within the Practice, alerting the GP Partners to clinical governance, quality and risk issues as appropriate
4 / Work effectively and collaboratively with members of the Practice team and with other Practice-based external colleagues, including the District Nurse, Health Visitor and Midwifery teams
5 / Observe a duty of care in relation to equipment and resources used in the workplace
6 / Follow policies and procedures within the Practice, suggesting changes to improve efficiency where appropriate

USE OF EQUIPMENT, MACHINERY AND SYSTEMS
1 / Access the Practice clinical system (INPS Vision) via PC, to record and manage patient appointments and to input and access patient data
2 / Use DOCMAN software to access a range of clinical information, including letters, laboratory results and other documents and make patient referrals via SCI Gateway
PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
1 / Effectively manage own time, workload and resources while contributing to the Practice team
2 / Maintain knowledge and awareness of relevant local and national policies, including: prescribing, confidentiality, Data Protection, Health & Safety
3 / Participate in annual GP appraisal, taking personal responsibility for maintaining records of personal and professional development
4 / Commit to lifelong learning by maintaining professional education and development through attendance at relevant study events with prior agreement of the GP Partners. Participate in in-house training events as required
5 / Communicate with Practice colleagues to achieve shared goals, receiving and giving constructive feedback and being open to the opinions of others
6 / Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
- Fully trained and accredited General Practitioner (MRCGP)
- Registered with the General Medical Council
- Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary clinical team
- Experience of working under pressure in a busy clinical environment, while determining own work priorities
- Included on NHS Lothian’s Performers list
- Member of Disclosure Scotland PVG Scheme
- 6 months’ post qualification experience
Essential:
- Understanding of evidence-based practice
- A good knowledge of and interest in General Practice and Primary Care
- Ability to analyse information, assessing its implications for the individual patient and impact on the care plan
- Negotiation and conflict management
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Good IT skills
- Knowledge of current Primary Care delivery policy and national legislation, including GMS contract and Clinical Governance
