Seeing the plate in a new light
Since Holmegaard embraced the “upcycling” trend last year with the launch of the Northern Lights glass series, the desire to repurpose materials in the modern home has truly begun to gain traction. As conscious consumers, we are not only concerned about what we put on our plates, but about what our plates are made from, and in line with this trend, Holmegaard is now supplementing the Northern Lights collection with a generously sized plate designed for green meals.
Most trends come and go, but some endure, surviving more than just the one season. Take the recycling wave, for instance. After just a few years, it has become such a natural part of modern design that objects are not only recycled but improve – upcycled – to serve a new and better purpose. We use pallets as coffee tables and turn driftwood into furniture, or we create modern designs for the home out of old jam jars, like Holmegaard does with the Northern Lights glass series.
A well-laid table
Over the years, Peter Svarrer has created a wide range of glass designs for Holmegaard and is the man behind many of the most popular products for the table and home. This includes the Northern Lights collection featuring Svarrer’s unique signature – the organic shape and the reflection of glass – which has quickly become an integral part of modern table settings with a range of drinking gasses, little bowls, salad bowls and votives. This autumn, Holmegaard is supplementing the Northern Lights series with a plate created for the large lunch or small dinner. Like the other products in the series, the Northern Lights plate is handmade from melted-down jam jars with a clear Nordic design DNA, which is also visible in the characteristic pattern in the glass, bringing to life the phenomenon of the Nordic heavens, the aurora, in the middle of your dining room table.
The Northern Lights plate (Ø 23 cm) is available in the colours lagoon, spring and white, and together with the other products in the series is perfect for making a “green” design statement at the table: for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, individual portions and side dishes...
The new plates are priced at GBP21.95 (RRP) and will be available in shops from mid-August 2013.
