NEW JERSEY SCIENCE LEAGUE (2016)
Background
The Science League is a competitive science organization operating within the State of New Jersey open to all public and private schools in the State. It is unique in both the State and our Nation. It was started in 1962 by Dr. Mal Sturchio, a professor of chemistry at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
The approximately 150 participating schools in the state are divided into 32 areas. We are in area 18.The Woodbridge and Edison Academies normally alternate as host for these two schools.
Dates
All of the 2017dates are Thursdays. Exams start no later than 4 PM and last 50 minutes. After the exam is over, a refreshment break is held for the students while the teachers grade the exams. If things are running on schedule, the students typically leave the host school between 4:45 and 5:00 PM, arriving at the Edison Academy soon after 5:00 PM.
Testing Dates for 2017
Thursday January 12, 2017 Thursday February 9, 2017
Thursday March 9, 2017 Thursday April 20, 2017
Exams are multiple choice. Each exam covers a specific set of topics that are known in advance. Participation by students is limited to only one year in each exam category.
Competition and Awards
The competition is at a state level among the approximately 150 participating schools. There are both team and individual awards in each subject area.
Academy Students Participation
We look forward to our students continuing to be among the top students in each subject. However, students must be available for all four Thursday testing dates. if there are conflicting activities (Model UN, Mock Trial, etc.) students must make a choice to commit to the Science League in order to participate. Onlyfour students may take a given subject test for a team score on any test date.
Transportation
For the 2017season, the Board of Education has funding to provide busing for our science league students from the Academy to the host school (Woodbridge Academy) and back. The bus will leave at 3:00 PM and return at (or soon after) 5:00 PM.
