Psalm 86

Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy.

2Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.

3Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.

4Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

5For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

6Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.

7In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.

8Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.

9All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.

10For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

11Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

12I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.

13For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.

14O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul; and have not set thee before them.

15But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.

16O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid.

17Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.

In 1 Corinthians 13:12, the apostle reminds us that now we “know in part.: When Christ returns and His kingdom comes in its fullness, then we will have answers to questions that are currently beyond us. In the meantime, we are to trust that the one in control has our best interests at heart. We do not have all the answers now, but we can rest assured that God does.

KEY VERSE: As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me.—Psalm 55:16

CENTRAL THOUGHT: God is good, God is all powerful, and evil exists. While it is difficult to reconcile these three facts, we can see in Job an example of trust in God in the face of the unanswered questions.

I Will Call on God

Devotional Reading: Jeremiah 14:14-22

Background Scripture: Job 5, 24; Psalm 55:12-23

Printed Text: Job 24:1, 9-12, 19-25

Job 24:1, 9-12, 19-25:

1 Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?

9They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor.

10They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry;

11Which make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst.

12Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them.

19Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave those which have sinned.

20The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.

21He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not: and doeth not good to the widow.

22He draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life.

23Though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth; yet his eyes are upon their ways.

24They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.

25And if it be not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?

Heavy Questions:

In last week’s lesson, we saw Job wrestling with the issue of the suffering of innocent people. This week he ponders the issue of the prosperity of the wicked. In the interim between Job 19 (last week) and Job 24 (this week), Job has undergone two more rounds of counseling—one by Zophat (chap.20) and one by Eliphaz (chap 22).

The friends’ counsel did not comfort Job. They said he was guilty of wrongdoing that deserved to be punished. They accused him of pride in being unwilling to confess his guilt. They called him to heed time tested wisdom, to repent of evil, and to get right with God so God could prosper him again. Today’s text offers us another part of Job’s reaction.
